IITP Admission Dates

IIT Patna has closed the 2026-27 admission cycle for B.Tech, dual degree, M.Tech, M.Sc, MBA, and Ph.D. programmes. The upcoming entrance and admission events for the next cycle are listed below.

IITP Courses and Fees

IIT Patna runs UG, PG, and doctoral programmes in Engineering, Sciences, Management, and Humanities and Social Sciences. Its B.Tech degree covers 11 core branches, and the institute also offers dual degrees and interdisciplinary programmes. The fee details below are for the General category.

IIT Patna is among the few IITs with a BS in Economics and a separate MBA in Product Management. The Product Management MBA focuses on product design, technology, and business strategy. M.Tech options include advanced manufacturing, VLSI design, environmental engineering, rock engineering, transportation engineering, and core computing and electrical branches.

IITP Admission Process

B.Tech and Dual Degree Admission

IIT Patna admits students to B.Tech and dual-degree programmes through JEE Advanced rank and JoSAA online counselling. The institute does not conduct a separate test or interview for these seats. Seat allotment depends on rank, category, choices filled, and seat availability.

• Eligibility: Students must qualify JEE Main and JEE Advanced. Only the top 2,50,000 JEE Main qualifiers can appear for JEE Advanced.
• Selection stages: JEE Advanced result, JoSAA registration, choice filling, 6 rounds of seat allotment, document verification, and institute reporting
• Seat types: Gender-neutral seats and female-only supernumerary seats are followed in every category as per the IIT common seat matrix.

M.Tech Admission

M.Tech admission at IITP is based on GATE score and CCMT counselling. The institute offers 18 M.Tech specialisations. Students need a B.Tech or BE degree with 55% aggregate in the relevant branch.

M.Sc Admission

For M.Sc Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics, admission is through IIT JAM. Students must have a B.Sc degree with the relevant subject as a major. The admission process is handled through the official JAM admission portal instead of a separate IITP process.

MBA Admission

IIT Patna selects students for MBA and MBA in Product Management in two stages.

• Eligibility: Graduation in any discipline with 55% aggregate
• Entrance: Valid CAT or GMAT score
• Selection stages: Written Ability Test (WAT) and Personal Interview (PI), followed by a composite merit list using CAT/GMAT score, academics, work experience, and WAT-PI performance

Ph.D. Admission

Ph.D. admission takes place twice a year, for Semester I in July and Semester II in January. Students with a valid GATE, NET, JEST, or UGC-JRF score can apply. A master’s degree in the relevant field with 55% aggregate also meets the eligibility rule. Departments select students through a written test and interview.

IITP Placements

IIT Patna holds final placements in the first semester of every academic year. During the 2025-26 placement season, 207 students received job offers from 70+ companies. The highest package was INR 1.17 CPA, the average package was INR 25.52 LPA, and the UG median package stood at INR 18 LPA.

Students received 12 international offers in Japan, Singapore, and the US. Also, 15 students received packages above INR 60 LPA. Google gave 13 offers, Microsoft gave 9 offers, and Flipkart gave 7 offers. CSE, Data Science and AI, and Mathematics and Computing students received the highest-value offers.

Recruiters confirmed for IIT Patna include Google, Microsoft, Goldman Sachs, Flipkart, Samsung, BEL, BPCL, L&T, Optum, Cisco, Accenture, and Reliance. Mechanical, Civil, Chemical, and Materials Engineering students are hired by core engineering firms. PSUs such as BEL and BPCL also recruit through GATE-based direct hiring and lateral campus offers.

IITP Rankings

IIT Patna entered the top 20 in NIRF Engineering for the first time in 2025 with rank 19. It also secured NIRF Overall rank 36, making it the only Bihar institution in the NIRF top 50. The institute is placed in the top 50 in the NIRF Research category as well.

IIT Patna takes part in NIRF for Engineering, Overall, Research, and Innovation categories. Its Engineering rank rose from 34 in 2024 to 19 in 2025 because of stronger research output, patents, and student outcomes. The institute is not listed as a standalone entry in the QS World University Rankings Top 500, but it is included in IIT system aggregated submissions to global ranking bodies.

IITP Campus and Infrastructure

IIT Patna’s permanent campus at Bihta covers 501 acres and is 35 km from central Patna. Since becoming fully operational in 2015, the campus has housed academic departments, research centres, and student residences in one setting. Major research facilities include the Aryabhatta Supercomputing Centre, connected with the National Supercomputing Mission, and the PHN Technology Centre, which supports work in robotics, artificial intelligence, and the Internet of Things.

The technology business incubator has supported 17+ startups in areas such as deep-tech, clean energy, and health-tech. Separate residential blocks are available for undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral students. Sports facilities include a cricket ground, football field, basketball and volleyball courts, a swimming pool, and a gym. The campus also has a central library, medical centre, and food courts.

IIT Patna has 8 active international academic collaborations and more than INR 500 crore in research funding from MHRD/MoE, DST, DBT, BRNS, ISRO, and international agencies. The institute has filed 88+ patents and published 500+ research papers in peer-reviewed journals. Through the Undergraduate Research Programme (URP), B.Tech students can access research labs from the third year onward.

IITP Scholarships

IIT Patna provides fee waivers and scholarships approved by the Ministry of Education. It also offers institute merit awards and research fellowships for doctoral students.

Eligible students from minority and economically weaker sections can also apply for NSP scholarships, including PM-USP Yojana and state-level Oasis schemes. Doctoral and postdoctoral researchers at IITP also use external fellowships from DST, SERB, and CSIR.

IIT Patna vs IIT Jodhpur vs IIT Bhubaneswar

Students with General category JEE Advanced ranks between 5,000 and 20,000 often compare IIT Patna with IIT Jodhpur and IIT Bhubaneswar. All three are second-generation IITs, began in 2008, and have similar programme profiles and JEE cutoff bands. Among them, IITP has the strongest NIRF Engineering position after reaching rank 19 in 2025.

IIT Patna is ahead of the three in NIRF Engineering rank and research output indicators. IIT Jodhpur has the largest campus among them and has grown into creative and interdisciplinary programmes. IIT Bhubaneswar has access to the Bhubaneswar tech corridor and PSU hiring demand from Odisha-based companies. For JEE Advanced students choosing between these institutes, branch choice and location preference usually matter most because all three are Institutes of National Importance.
