BE Marine Engineering and BSc Nautical Science are AMET's main maritime courses. Both have DGS approval under the STCW framework. The one-year GME route allows BE or BTech Mechanical Engineering graduates to qualify as Marine Engineer Officers without completing the four-year BE Marine Engineering course. AMET has also added programmes in artificial intelligence, data science and health technology alongside its established maritime courses.
AMET University Admission Process
Admission requirements depend on the programme. Maritime applicants must meet entrance-test and medical conditions, while several engineering, management, health science and business courses provide other test-based or merit-based routes.
BE Marine Engineering and BSc Nautical Science
A valid IMU-CET score is compulsory for these DGS-regulated courses. Students must also satisfy DGS medical standards before their seats can be confirmed.
- Complete 10+2 or an equivalent qualification with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.
- General-category applicants must have at least 60% aggregate in PCM.
- Meet the DGS rules for eyesight, height and physical fitness.
- Qualify through the IMU-CET score shortlist.
- Attend AMET's counselling and document verification.
- Obtain DGS medical clearance and complete admission confirmation.
AMET uses IMU-CET as the qualifying filter but conducts its own counselling instead of the centralised counselling used for IMU campuses. The university therefore prepares its own merit list and handles seat allocation directly.
BE Naval Architecture and Offshore Engineering
Applicants with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics in Class 12 may seek admission through IMU-CET, JEE Main, TNEA counselling or direct merit. DGS medical fitness is not compulsory for this programme.
BTech and BE Engineering Programmes (CSE, AI and ML, Mechanical, Electrical)
Selection is available through JEE Main, Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions (TNEA) counselling or direct academic merit. Candidates who do not join TNEA can submit their applications directly to the university.
- Applicants need 10+2 with PCM and at least 60% aggregate.
- Direct merit admission does not require an entrance examination.
MBA (Logistics and Shipping Management)
AMET considers CAT, MAT or GMAT scores for MBA admission. Preference is given to students from maritime, logistics or engineering backgrounds for the Logistics and Shipping specialisation. Shipping or logistics work experience can support an application but is not compulsory.
Health Sciences, BBA and Ph.D.
BSc Health Sciences and BBA selection is based on Class 12 marks in the relevant stream, with applications submitted directly to AMET. Ph.D. applicants need a Master's degree in the appropriate discipline and must pass the university's written test and interview.
AMET University Placements and Career Outcomes
Placement results differ by academic stream. In the latest reported season, Naval Architecture and Offshore Engineering produced the highest package of INR 14 LPA. Maersk, Goodwood Ship Management, Chevron and Shell were among the recruiters for this field. At the fresher level, the overall campus placement rate is 90 percent.
| Programme Stream | Highest Package | Average Package | Key Recruiters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Naval Architecture and Offshore Engineering | INR 14 LPA | INR 6 to 8 LPA | Maersk, Goodwood, Chevron, Shell |
| General Engineering and Management | INR 7.2 LPA | INR 3 to 5 LPA | L and T, DHL Express, HCL |
| BE Marine Engineering (Sea Pay) | INR 10 LPA and above at sea | INR 6 to 8 LPA | NYK, Anglo-Eastern, Fleet Management, Maersk |
Marine Engineering graduates enter the merchant navy as engine officers, while Nautical Science graduates begin as Deck Cadet Officers and progress through deck ranks. Junior officers generally start with sea pay between INR 6 LPA and INR 10 LPA, with earnings increasing as they gain seniority. AMET's ECR location near the port supports links with international shipping companies and port-based employers.
AMET University Scholarships
Students may receive financial assistance through AMET merit awards, need-based support, category-specific concessions and government scholarship schemes.
| Scholarship | Eligibility | Coverage |
|---|---|---|
| AMET Merit Scholarship | 90% and above in Higher Secondary Education | Tuition fee concession, with the amount varying by programme |
| Maritime Training Trust Scholarship (DGS) | Female cadets studying in DGS-approved pre-sea maritime programmes | INR 1 Lakh per year |
| Shree Janakiraman Scholarship | Students from economically backward families | Partial tuition fee concession |
| First Graduate Fee Concession | Students who are the first graduates in their families | 15% of the tuition fee |
| Ex-Servicemen Scholarship | Children of Indian Armed Forces personnel | 15% of the tuition fee |
Eligible students can also apply for SC/ST fee reimbursement, the Central Sector Scholarship and state government schemes. Maritime students may qualify for bursaries sponsored by shipping companies that recruit from AMET.
AMET University Campus and Infrastructure
AMET's Kanathur campus is on Chennai's East Coast Road in Tamil Nadu, 25 km from the city centre and next to the Bay of Bengal. The full campus covers 137 acres. It is being developed as AMET Knowledge Park, which contains the Institute of Science and Technology (AMET IST) on 21.02 dedicated acres.
Separate hostel wings are available for male and female students, with accommodation and mess fees reaching INR 1.25 Lakhs per year. Other facilities include a cafeteria, sports amenities, a parade ground and a maritime library. The coastal location also supports the simulation and sea-training requirements connected with STCW certification.
Specialised laboratories and simulators serve Marine Engineering, Naval Architecture and Nautical Science students. As AMET expands beyond maritime education, the Knowledge Park is planned to house its newer engineering, health science and technology departments.
AMET University vs IMU Chennai vs IMU Kolkata
Students exploring maritime courses often compare AMET with the Chennai and Kolkata campuses of Indian Maritime University. All three have DGS-recognised maritime programmes, but their management, course range, fees and locations differ.
| Parameter | AMET University, Chennai | IMU Chennai | IMU Kolkata |
|---|---|---|---|
| Type | Private Deemed University recognised by UGC | Central University under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping | Central University campus under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping |
| Established | 1993 | 2008 | 1949, as MERI |
| NAAC Grade | A grade, CGPA 3.13 | Not published separately | Not published separately |
| BE Marine Engineering Fees | INR 15.99 Lakhs | Refer to the official IMU website | INR 11.40 Lakhs for BTech |
| Admission (Maritime) | IMU-CET and direct routes | IMU-CET | IMU-CET |
| DGS Recognition | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Location | Kanathur, Chennai, ECR | Chennai | Kolkata, West Bengal |
The two IMU campuses hold Central University status and come under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways. AMET is a Deemed University with a wider selection of subjects and direct admission options in addition to IMU-CET routes. For the comparable Marine Engineering degree, IMU Kolkata's BTech fee of INR 11.40 Lakhs is lower than AMET's BE fee of INR 15.99 Lakhs. Since all three provide DGS-recognised routes to seafaring certification, students can compare location, fees, academic range and their preference for a Central or Deemed University.
