Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology (RGIPT) was established in 2007 as an Institute of National Importance through an Act of Parliament. It works under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Government of India, and focuses on education and research in petroleum, energy and related engineering fields. The institute is approved by AICTE and recognised by UGC.

RGIPT has its main campus at Jais, Amethi, Uttar Pradesh, along with campuses in Bengaluru and Sivasagar, Assam. The fully residential Jais campus covers 47 acres. It provides separate hostels for male and female students and has a central mess with space for 200 students.

The four-year B.Tech fee is INR 12.71 Lakhs for every specialisation, while the two-year MBA costs INR 8.63 Lakhs. Petroleum Engineering, Petrochemical Engineering and Energy Engineering courses use curriculum inputs from HPCL, ONGC and international petroleum companies. RGIPT has also expanded into Computer Science and Design, Electric Vehicle Technology and Renewable Engineering.

B.Tech and Integrated Programmes

Only students who qualify JEE Advanced can seek admission to RGIPT B.Tech and integrated B.Tech + M.Tech/MS courses. RGIPT takes part in JoSAA as a special-category institution alongside the IITs, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad and IIPE Visakhapatnam.

  • Complete Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, securing at least 75%, or 65% for SC, ST and PwD students, and qualify JEE Advanced.
  • Enter RGIPT choices during JoSAA registration and choice filling.
  • Take part in seat allotment, which usually covers six rounds.
  • Complete document verification and admission after receiving a seat.

MBA

Applicants need a bachelor’s degree in any subject with at least 50% marks and a valid CAT or CMAT score. RGIPT calls shortlisted applicants for a Group Discussion and Personal Interview. Available fields include Energy Management and Petroleum Business, along with Finance, Business Analytics, Marketing, HR and Operations.

M.Tech, M.Sc. and Ph.D.

M.Tech applicants must have a valid GATE score in the relevant subject and attend an RGIPT interview. M.Sc. selection uses JAM or CUET-PG scores. For Ph.D. admission, applicants need a master’s degree and a valid GATE, UGC-NET or CSIR-NET score. They must also present a research proposal and complete an interview.

Petroleum Engineering students are regularly considered by ExxonMobil, HPCL, ONGC, Cairn India, Schlumberger (SLB) and Halliburton. RGIPT Campus and Infrastructure

RGIPT’s main campus occupies 47 acres at Jais in Amethi, Uttar Pradesh, 60 km from Lucknow. It is fully residential, so students must live in the hostels throughout their programmes.

Accommodation is divided among three blocks. Block A has 89 rooms for male students, Block B has 126 rooms for male students, and the female students’ hostel contains 66 rooms. Each room includes beds, study tables, almirahs and chairs. A central mess seats 200 students and provides three meals every day. Students also have access to Wi-Fi, sports grounds, activity areas and a central library.

Academic facilities include petroleum engineering laboratories, computing laboratories, chemical engineering pilot plant setups and a Central Instrumentation Facility. HPCL, BPCL, ONGC and international energy companies support industry-based practical training and contribute to research equipment through institutional collaborations. The Bengaluru campus uses the city’s technology environment to support postgraduate and doctoral programmes.

IIT (ISM) Dhanbad has the stronger NIRF position and requires a more competitive JEE Advanced rank. Its Engineering rank is 13, compared with RGIPT’s 78. RGIPT, however, is the only Institute of National Importance dedicated to petroleum under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas. This mandate supports direct links with HPCL, BPCL and ONGC. UPES does not require JEE Advanced, so students who have not qualified that examination can still pursue petroleum or energy engineering there.
