CMAT Academic Qualification

For CMAT 2026, an applicant needed a bachelor's degree in any discipline and Indian citizenship. There was no age restriction. Commerce, arts, science and engineering graduates could apply; an undergraduate management degree was not compulsory.

Class 12 alone does not meet the graduate-level qualification. A diploma should not be treated as a bachelor's degree unless its recognised equivalence meets the applicable requirement. The degree must be recognised; NTA can cancel candidature if the qualification is not recognised under the applicable norms.

The exam conditions and the requirements of an MBA college are separate. Submitting the CMAT application form or receiving an admit card does not confirm admission eligibility at every institution.

Can Final-Year Students Apply?

Final-year bachelor's students were eligible in 2026 if their result would be declared before admission began for that academic year. This is a result-completion condition, not permission to join a programme with an unfinished degree.

A student waiting for the final semester result can therefore be in a different position from a student in the first or second year of a three-year degree. The first may meet the appearing-candidate route; the second has not reached the qualifying stage.

A pending backlog also needs attention. Check when the university will declare the cleared result and when the chosen institution requires proof of graduation. A good CMAT score cannot replace that proof. Do not assume that all colleges use the same last date for submitting final marksheets.

Is 50% Required for CMAT?

The 2026 NTA eligibility criteria did not set a universal minimum graduation percentage for appearing in CMAT. A blanket statement that every General candidate needs 50% and every reserved-category candidate needs 45% for the test would mix exam eligibility with college admission rules.

For example, a graduate below a college's required academic percentage may still meet the CMAT appearance criteria, but the score will not waive that college's marks requirement. Check the academic condition before comparing entrance-test cutoffs.

Age Limit, Study Gaps and Degree Background

CMAT 2026 had no age restriction. The listed appearance criteria did not set a maximum gap after graduation or require work experience. A working graduate could apply if the degree and citizenship conditions were met.

The degree could be in any discipline. A non-commerce background did not make a student ineligible. CMAT tests quantitative techniques, data interpretation, reasoning, language comprehension, general awareness, and innovation and entrepreneurship; these test sections are not a list of compulsory undergraduate subjects.

For an online, distance or overseas qualification, establish its recognition or accepted equivalence rather than assuming that the mode or country alone decides eligibility. Foreign citizenship does not meet the Indian-citizen condition stated for CMAT 2026.

CMAT Reservation Rules

The 2026 bulletin listed the following reservation for institutes run by the Central Government:

The 5% PwD/PwBD reservation is within the category seats; it is not an extra category to add to SC, ST, OBC-NCL and EWS percentages. For institutions run, aided or recognised by state governments, the relevant state reservation policy applies.

CMAT does not itself allocate a common pool of MBA seats. Each participating admission process applies its own relevant seat policy. The central table should not be presented as the seat distribution at every private or state college.

OBC-NCL and Category Documents

For the NTA form, OBC-NCL referred to the Central List. The 2026 instructions directed candidates who appeared only in a state OBC list, and not in the Central List OBC-NCL category, to choose General.

Category and disability claims are checked against documents. Keep the applicable certificate and ensure the category entered in the form matches the claim that can be supported. A later admission authority may ask for additional category or state-specific evidence.

The 2026 correction window allowed category and sub-category changes, with any additional fee payable. It did not make category changes available indefinitely. The CMAT dates distinguish form correction from the later result and admission stages.

Scribe and Compensatory Time

The 2026 rules allowed a scribe for eligible candidates with a writing limitation. For benchmark disability involving blindness, both arms affected by locomotor disability, or cerebral palsy, the facility could be provided if requested. Other benchmark-disability cases required the specified medical certificate establishing the writing limitation and need for a scribe.

Candidates with less than 40% disability could also qualify for a scribe and/or compensatory time where the prescribed competent medical authority certified difficulty in writing. The percentage alone was therefore not a complete test of eligibility for assistance.

Eligible candidates were allowed at least 20 minutes of compensatory time per hour, amounting to at least one hour for the three-hour examination. The provision could apply even where an eligible candidate did not use a scribe.

An own scribe had to be one qualification step below the candidate, with the required undertaking and details. The scribe could read or enter responses as directed, but could not explain a question or suggest an answer. The CMAT exam-day document requirements cover the certificates to carry.

Documents That Support Eligibility

• Academic: degree or provisional completion evidence and marksheets; final-year students need the final result when the institution requires it.
• Identity: personal details matching the application and the accepted examination ID.
• Category: the applicable certificate supporting the reservation or fee claim.
• Disability and scribe: the required certificate/UDID, writing-limitation evidence and own-scribe documents where applicable.

Admission documents are checked by the institution as well as the examination-stage checks. Retain the application confirmation and scorecard with these records; an admit card is not a replacement for academic or category proof.
