CMAT Paper Analysis: 2026 Review for 2027 Preparation

CMAT 2027 has not been held. NTA's tentative calendar places it on 7 February 2027. The analysis here concerns the completed 2026 paper and the preparation lessons it offers.

The 2026 examination took place on 25 January in one shift. It contained 100 questions across five sections, with 20 questions and 80 marks per section. The total duration was 180 minutes.

Post-exam coaching reviews generally described Quant, Reasoning and Language as manageable, while General Awareness and Entrepreneurship depended more on subject knowledge. These are reported difficulty assessments, not ratings issued by NTA.

CMAT 2026 Section-Wise Difficulty

The reviews do not give exactly the same label to every section. A candidate comfortable with static GK may find a factual question straightforward, while another candidate cannot work it out from a formula. This makes difficulty less uniform than the question count.

A reported good-attempt range is also an opinion about an attempt, not an official qualifying mark. Accuracy and the final key determine raw marks; the score distribution determines percentile.

Quantitative Techniques and DI: Topic Distribution

Both IMS and Hitbullseye reported the following broad distribution in the 20-question Quant/DI section. The counts describe the 2026 paper, not fixed weights for the next exam.

Arithmetic included work-rate, ratio, profit and loss, percentages and mixtures. Numbers covered skills such as fractions, powers, roots and HCF/LCM. The DI portion was reported as a table-based set with three questions.

Arithmetic and numbers together accounted for 13 of the 20 questions in that reported breakdown. Strengthen those foundations, but do not remove algebra from your CMAT syllabus preparation because one paper had no separately classified algebra question.

Logical Reasoning: Standalone Questions

The coaching reviews described the 2026 LR section as mainly short, standalone questions rather than long linked sets. Topics included family relationships, directions, coding, clocks, figure counting, cubes, arrangements and verbal reasoning.

The detailed topic counts differ between reviews, partly because a question can be classified in more than one way. For preparation, the useful distinction is between a self-contained reasoning problem and a multi-question arrangement set. Practise both, but do not build every session around lengthy puzzles.

For a standalone question, identify the one condition that controls the answer. In a direction problem, keep the final displacement separate from the total distance travelled. In a family-tree question, draw only the relationships explicitly given before deciding a person's relation.

Language Comprehension: Grammar Beyond RC

Both reviews reported two reading-comprehension questions and 18 non-RC questions. Sentence-level language therefore occupied more of this paper than passage questions.

CAT-style passage preparation can help with reading, but it does not cover all of this language work. Include grammar and vocabulary exercises in full sentences. When reviewing a grammar answer, identify the rule being tested instead of learning only that one option was correct.

General Awareness and Entrepreneurship

The 2026 General Awareness reviews described a strong tilt towards static GK, including Indian history, science, sports, awards, books and institutions. The reports differed slightly on the exact static/current split. A broad reading of the paper is more useful than treating either split as a guaranteed future ratio.

Entrepreneurship questions drew on venture creation, funding, business and management concepts. Reported topics included bootstrapping, venture capital, entrepreneurial qualities, design thinking and business feasibility.

Study those concepts through decisions a business makes. Bootstrapping concerns using the founder's or business's own resources; venture capital involves outside investment. How Many Attempts Make a Good CMAT Score?

The same attempt count can produce very different marks. Under the ordinary 2026 marking rule, a correct answer earns four marks and a wrong answer loses one mark.

Both students attempt 75 questions, but their totals differ by 50 marks. That is why an attempt count alone cannot establish a percentile. Any dropped or revised-key question must also follow the final NTA scoring rule.

Use CMAT papers and solutions to compare your method with the answer, then review the difference between raw marks and percentile before interpreting a mock or provisional-key total.

What Should Change in Your Preparation?

• Keep arithmetic and number skills strong, then apply them to tables and charts.
• Mix short reasoning questions with arrangement practice instead of preparing only long sets.
• Give grammar, vocabulary and sentence completion space alongside reading comprehension.
• Revise static GK as well as current affairs.
• Learn entrepreneurship concepts well enough to recognise them in business situations.

The 2026 paper helps identify skills worth strengthening. It does not lock the 2027 chapter count, difficulty or score distribution. Retain the wider topic coverage while using this review to improve the work you do within each section.
