CMAT Score vs Percentile: What Is the Difference?

A CMAT score is a marks total. A percentile places that score among the candidates who appeared in the relevant session. 240 out of 400 means 60% marks, not 60 percentile. The same raw marks can correspond to different percentiles in different examinations.

CMAT 2027 has not been held, so its actual score-to-percentile distribution is not available. For now, you can calculate raw marks using the previous marking scheme and understand how NTA calculates percentile. A fixed table claiming that a particular mark guarantees 99 percentile in 2027 would not establish your result.

How to Calculate Your CMAT Score

The 2026 paper had 100 questions for 400 marks. Each correct answer earned four marks, each incorrect answer lost one mark, and an unanswered question earned zero.

Raw score = (4 x correct answers) - incorrect answers.

For example, 70 correct answers and 10 wrong answers give (70 x 4) - 10 = 270 marks. The remaining 20 questions contribute zero. The marks percentage is 270 / 400 x 100 = 67.5%.

These examples use ordinary correct, incorrect and unanswered questions. A question dropped for a technical reason follows the final NTA rule: the 2026 bulletin awarded its marks to all candidates, whether they attempted it or not. Revised answers must also be matched with the final key. The calculator below does not add such question-specific adjustments.

How NTA Calculates CMAT Percentile

Percentile = 100 x candidates in the session with a raw score equal to or below yours / total candidates who appeared in that session.

Suppose 10,000 candidates appear in a session and 9,800 score equal to or below your marks. Your percentile in this illustration is 100 x 9,800 / 10,000 = 98. The denominator is the number who appeared, not the number who registered.

NTA calculates percentile scores to seven decimal places under the bulletin procedure. The highest score in a session receives 100 percentile even when it is below the maximum possible raw marks. If several candidates share that highest score, they can all receive 100 percentile.

The total percentile is based on the total-score distribution. It is not the average of the five section percentiles. A raw-score calculator cannot reproduce it without the relevant candidate score data.

CMAT 2025 and 2026: Why Year and Shift Matter

In 2025, NTA conducted two shifts and converted the raw marks in each session into percentile scores. CMAT 2026 was held in one shift, and its result notice reported marks with corresponding percentile scores. Do not assume that a two-shift arrangement applies to every year.

A mark-to-percentile comparison changes with the score distribution, not simply with the number of registrations. An easier paper can put more candidates above a given mark; a harder paper can change that relationship. The official result, rather than a previous-year conversion table, establishes the final percentile.

CMAT Merit and Tied Scores

The 2026 merit rule assigned the same merit number to the same score. Within that group, the older candidate was listed first by date of birth. The next merit number skipped the positions occupied by the tie.

The date-of-birth order does not give candidates B and C different merit numbers. Equally, multiplying the appeared count by (100 - percentile) / 100 is not a reliable way to recover an exact official rank: ties, session scope and rounding matter.

Why Do CMAT Percentile Estimates Differ?

A response-sheet predictor usually sees only the candidates who submit their responses. That sample may contain a larger share of highly prepared students than the full examination. Its highest score is the highest in that sample, not automatically the highest in the country.

The provisional key can also change after challenges. Differences in the sample, revised answers and the session included can therefore change an estimate. Use an estimate as an estimate; the percentile on the CMAT scorecard is the final examination result.

For mock review, separate the two questions: how many marks did your answers earn, and which errors cost those marks? A percentile from one mock is relative to that mock's participants, not the CMAT examination cohort.

Which CMAT Score Should You Compare for Admission?

First identify whether the programme publishes a cutoff in raw marks or percentile. Then match its exam cycle, course, category, quota and admission round. A cutoff for one of these combinations should not be carried over to every seat at the institute.

Meeting an entrance-score threshold may allow the next selection stage rather than confirm admission. Institutes may also assess interviews, academic records or other requirements. Counselling routes add preferences, seat availability and document verification.
