Gauhati University Admission Process
Undergraduate Programmes (BA Hons, B.Sc Hons, B.Tech, BALLB, B.Ed): Gauhati University uses CUET-UG scores for UG admission. CUET-UG is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). Most UG courses do not have a separate GU entrance test. Students must pass Class 12 or an equivalent examination. The required minimum aggregate is 45% for General category students and 40% for SC/ST/OBC students.
For B.Tech, students must have studied Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics in Class 12. B.Ed applicants need a relevant bachelor’s degree. Seat allotment is done through the Samarth portal, using subject-wise CUET scores and cut-offs.
Postgraduate Programmes (MA, M.Sc, MBA, M.Tech, LLM, M.Ed): Most PG courses use CUET-PG scores. Applicants need a relevant undergraduate degree with at least 50% marks, while reserved category students need 45%. MBA selection includes CUET-PG, followed by Group Discussion and Personal Interview at the Department of Business Administration. For M.Tech, GATE scores are considered along with CUET-PG.
PhD: PhD applicants must appear for the Gauhati University Research Entrance Test (GURET). UGC-NET/JRF holders and GATE-qualified candidates may get direct interview admission without the written test, depending on the PhD admission notice for that year.
Affiliated Colleges: Gauhati University has 341 affiliated colleges across Assam and other northeastern states. UG admission in these colleges also follows the CUET-UG route. Each college conducts counselling under the GU framework.
- Check the course eligibility and admission notice on the official GU admissions portal.
- Register on the correct Samarth portal for the chosen programme.
- Enter academic details and valid CUET-UG, CUET-PG, GATE, GURET, or other required scores.
- Upload documents and submit the application before the last date.
- Follow the merit list, counselling, interview, or department-level selection process, as required by the course.
