Central Institute of Technology (CIT), Kokrajhar is a public technical institute founded by the Government of India in 2006. The institute is located in Kokrajhar, Assam, within the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) region, and was created under the Bodoland Peace Accord. It became a Deemed University in December 2018 and has recognition from UGC and AICTE.

CIT Kokrajhar was placed in the 251-300 band in the NIRF Engineering 2021 ranking. It continued submitting institutional data to NIRF in later years. Its academic options range from diploma courses to doctoral research.

The institute has a 300-acre campus, making it one of the largest technical institute campuses in Northeast India. Academic buildings, research laboratories and hostels are being expanded across the campus.

  • B.Tech: The institute has 275 sanctioned UG seats across Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE), Food Engineering and Instrumentation Engineering. Food Engineering connects with the agro-processing potential of the region and is one of the institute's distinctive courses. CIT Kokrajhar also offers Green Technology as an M.Tech specialisation, an uncommon postgraduate option among central government technical institutes in Northeast India.

CIT Kokrajhar Admission Process

The selection method depends on the programme. B.Tech applicants can use either the JoSAA route based on JEE Main or the institute's CITDEE route. Other courses use CITDEE, GATE or CITPET as applicable.

B.Tech Admission

CIT Kokrajhar divides its B.Tech intake between two admission channels. JoSAA fills 40% of the seats, and CITDEE covers the remaining 60%.

  • Step 1, choose the admission route: For the JoSAA route, students need a valid JEE Main score and must register on the JoSAA portal for online seat allotment. General-category closing ranks in JoSAA 2025 were 55,464 for CSE, 70,302 for ECE and 84,979 for Civil Engineering.
  • Step 2, take CITDEE when using direct entry: The CIT Direct Entry Examination is a written test organised by CIT Kokrajhar for Class 12 students with PCM. This path is aimed at applicants from Northeast India and candidates in the OBC-NC, SC and ST categories.
  • Step 3, meet the academic requirement: Applicants must have completed 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. General-category students need at least 45% aggregate in PCM.

Because CIT Kokrajhar was founded under the BTC settlement framework, reservation provisions apply to Scheduled Tribes from the Bodoland Territorial Council region. Applicants belonging to the BTC region receive preference during CITDEE-based seat allotment.

B.Des (Multimedia) Admission

CITDEE is the only stated route for B.Des admission. Applicants may come from any 10+2 stream but should have suitable design and multimedia aptitude. Selection may include both a written test and a studio test.

M.Tech and M.Des Admission

For M.Tech, students need a B.Tech degree in the relevant field and a valid GATE score. Direct applicants may also be considered through CITPET, the CIT Post-Graduate Entrance Test. M.Des applicants must hold an appropriate undergraduate qualification in design or a related area.

Diploma Admission

Students who have passed Class 10 can apply for diploma programmes. They take the diploma-level CITDEE, after which candidates are shortlisted by merit. Diploma holders in a matching branch may also seek lateral entry into the second year of B.Tech.

CIT Kokrajhar Placements

The Training and Placement Cell manages recruitment at CIT Kokrajhar. In 2025, the highest package was INR 12 LPA and the average stood at INR 4.5 LPA. Department-wise data for 2024 shows that ECE received the most offers at 26, followed by CSE with 19.

Recent engineering placement rates have ranged from 65% to 75%. IT and core engineering companies form the main recruiter group. Public sector organisations also participate, with ONGC and Indian Oil visiting the institute regularly.

The institution received Deemed University status in 2018 after operating as an autonomous institute. As a younger university, it is developing its research output and citation record, both of which influence the NIRF method. CIT Kokrajhar is not currently included in any major international ranking.

CIT Kokrajhar Campus and Infrastructure

CIT Kokrajhar is spread across 300 acres in Kokrajhar town, Assam, about 235 km west of Guwahati. Students can reach Kokrajhar by road or by rail through the Assam Rail Link. The size of the campus allows academic and residential facilities to operate within the same boundary.

Hostel accommodation can serve 1,100 male students and 250 female students in several campus blocks. Other facilities include a central library, engineering department laboratories, a food engineering processing plant, an animation and multimedia studio, a gymnasium, a sports complex and campus-wide Wi-Fi.

Separate research laboratories support work in food processing, hydraulics, embedded systems and environmental engineering. The campus also contains playgrounds, green spaces and residential quarters for staff, forming a self-contained residential institute.

CIT Kokrajhar vs NIT Nagaland vs NIT Arunachal Pradesh

Students from Northeast India may compare these three Ministry of Education institutions when making JEE Main choices. Each institute participates in JoSAA, although their fees, course options, locations and level of admission competition differ.
