Champaran, where Gandhi began his first Satyagraha in 1917, gives MGCU's Gandhian Studies programme its local connection. Students can also pursue Journalism and Mass Communication through BA and MJMC degrees, or Library and Information Science through B.Lib and M.Lib degrees. MGCU's M.Phil remains active in 15 disciplines, although the NEP 2020 framework is phasing out the qualification nationally.

MGCU Admission Procedure

Undergraduate applicants enter through CUET UG, while postgraduate applicants use CUET PG. NTA administers both tests. Doctoral selection follows a separate process using UGC-NET, the Junior Research Fellowship (JRF), or the university's PhD entrance examination.

  1. Check the chosen programme's required subjects, qualifying degree, and minimum marks.
  2. Take CUET UG or CUET PG for the relevant level. PhD applicants must meet the applicable NET, JRF, or university entrance-test requirement.
  3. Complete MGCU's admission registration and submit the required academic and entrance-examination details.
  4. Follow the programme's merit list and counselling instructions. Complete document verification and pay the required admission fee when a seat is offered.

Requirements for Undergraduate Applicants

CUET UG assesses subject knowledge and language skills for undergraduate admission, including B.Tech, BA, B.Sc, B.Com, and B.Lib. B.Tech CSE applicants need Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics in Class 12 with at least 60% aggregate marks. For BA, B.Sc, and B.Com (Hons.), students must pass Class 12 with the subjects relevant to their chosen course.

Seats are allotted in merit order using CUET UG scores. B.Tech CSE attracts strong competition because seats are limited and the centrally funded fees are low. Students who want to continue directly to postgraduate study in Computer Science can choose the 5-year integrated B.Tech plus M.Tech route.

Requirements for Postgraduate Applicants

A relevant bachelor's degree with at least 50% marks is needed for postgraduate admission. The requirement is 45% for SC/ST/OBC applicants. CUET PG determines the merit order for programmes such as MA, M.Sc, MBA, M.Tech, MJMC, MSW, M.Com, M.Lib, and MCA.

MBA applicants must graduate from a recognised university. For M.Tech CSE, the qualifying degree must be a B.Tech in Computer Science or a related field. During the 2026-27 postgraduate admission cycle, over 2.83 lakh applicants sought 660 PG seats, showing the high demand for MGCU's centrally funded education.

Requirements for Doctoral Applicants

A postgraduate degree with at least 55% marks is the minimum qualification for PhD admission. Applicants can qualify through a valid UGC-NET or JRF score, or the MGCU PhD Entrance Test. JRF holders and UGC-funded doctoral scholars can receive fellowships. The university provides doctoral study in 19 disciplines covering Education, Commerce, Management, Social Sciences, Humanities, and Sciences.

MGCU Campus Facilities and Student Life

Motihari, the headquarters of Bihar's East Champaran district, is MGCU's home. The university sits on National Highway 28. A recent land addition has taken its campus beyond 261 acres, with further expansion underway. This places it among the larger campuses of the newer central universities. Champaran also has a special place in India's history because Gandhi launched his first Satyagraha here in 1917.

Students can use over 26,000 books at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Central Library, alongside magazines, newspapers, and electronic resources. Classrooms equipped with information and communication technology (ICT), together with research laboratories, support teaching and doctoral work in Physical Sciences, Life Sciences, Computational Sciences, and Humanities. Engineering courses belong to the School of Computational Sciences, Information and Communication Technology.

Men and women have separate hostels. Annual charges of up to INR 21,000 cover accommodation, mess services, Wi-Fi, and security available 24 hours a day. Health facilities, sports infrastructure, and shared recreation spaces are also available. Through the active National Service Scheme (NSS) unit, students take part in community outreach across East Champaran.

MGCU Scholarships and Research Funding

National and state government schemes help eligible MGCU students meet their study costs. The university's academic sections assist with applications, including those made through the National Scholarship Portal. Support includes Central Sector scholarships, INSPIRE awards for science students, Post-Matric schemes for SC/ST/OBC students, and UGC fellowships for doctoral scholars.

Doctoral students admitted through UGC-NET without JRF may seek fellowships attached to research projects or departmental research assistantships, subject to availability. For B.Sc (Hons.) students in Biotechnology, Zoology, Botany, Mathematics, Chemistry, and Physics, INSPIRE provides support of INR 80,000 annually for five years.

Comparing MGCU, CUSB and CUJ

Students exploring MGCU may also consider the Central University of South Bihar (CUSB) in Gaya and the Central University of Jharkhand (CUJ) in Ranchi. These eastern Indian central universities were established between 2009 and 2016. They offer a similar range of programmes with fees supported by central funding.

Among the three, CUJ has the largest campus and the widest choice of B.Tech specialisations. CUSB's establishment in 2009 has given it a longer period to develop its infrastructure and academic reputation. MGCU stands out for Gandhian Studies, strong competition for postgraduate seats, and its connection to historic Champaran. All three provide heavily subsidised education that follows national standards.

MGCU Frequently Asked Questions

Ques. Which legal and funding status does MGCU hold?

Ans. MGCU in Motihari operates as a fully funded central university under the Central Universities (Amendment) Act, 2014. It holds the distinction of being India's 41st central university and Bihar's second. Recognition and funding come from the University Grants Commission (UGC).

Ques. How do the total costs of MGCU's two engineering routes compare?
