IELTS by IDP is a useful starting point for IELTS preparation in India. It combines preparation, test booking and results, while its India offering includes sample material from Cambridge and additional preparation courses. If you prefer browser-based study, IELTS Ready from the British Council offers official practice tests and progress tools.
No single app is equally strong for all four skills. Reading and Listening can be practised and auto-marked on a screen. Writing and Speaking need feedback against the IELTS assessment criteria, so a large question bank without useful feedback has limited value.

Enter four whole or half-band scores. The result uses the official rule: add the four component bands, divide by four and round to the nearest whole or half band.
Examples: 6.25 becomes 6.5, 6.75 becomes 7.0, and 6.125 becomes 6.0. Universities and visa routes may require both an overall band and minimum skill bands.
IELTS by IDP suits candidates who want skill resources, preparation courses, booking and results in one app. IELTS Ready suits browser-based practice, with free mocks and a larger practice bank for eligible British Council bookings.
Choose by the missing function. Use official material for format and timed questions; add a paid product only if it gives better teaching or specific Writing and Speaking feedback.
Current British Council preparation pages direct candidates to IELTS Ready and IELTS Ready Premium. Older articles may still name an IELTS Prep app. Use the current British Council preparation page rather than searching for an old app name or installing an unofficial copy.
It can cover both only if it separates the Reading and Writing material by test type. Listening and Speaking are common, but Academic and General Training use different Reading texts and Writing Task 1 formats. Select your test type before building a score history.
Free official practice can be enough to learn the format and improve Reading and Listening if your English is already close to the required level. The target cannot be guaranteed by an app because the band reflects language performance, not completion of a course.
Writing and Speaking are the usual gap in an all-free plan. Use the public band descriptors, model responses and recorded practice, but arrange reliable feedback if your scores remain uncertain or unchanged.
No practice-app estimate is an official IELTS result. Auto-marked Listening and Reading scores can show progress when the test and conversion are sound. Writing and Speaking estimates depend on the quality of the response, recording and marking system. Use them to guide practice, then rely on the Test Report Form for the official band.
Add the Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking bands and divide by four. The average is rounded to the nearest whole or half band. An average ending in .25 moves to the next half band, while .75 moves to the next whole band. A university may still require a minimum band in each skill.
It should discuss task achievement or task response, coherence and cohesion, lexical resource, and grammatical range and accuracy. It should also distinguish Task 1 from Task 2 because Task 2 carries more weight. Grammar corrections alone do not explain an IELTS Writing band.
You can, but a phone is not the best final simulation for IELTS on computer. Use mobile mocks for practice and progress checks. Before test day, complete full Reading, Listening and Writing work on a laptop or desktop so passage scanning, typing and screen navigation are closer to the test experience.
