VTU Admission Dates 2027

The next VTU admission cycle for 2027-28 is expected to start with KCET 2027 registration. Students applying to B.Tech seats through the government quota should follow KEA updates for the registration schedule.

VTU Courses and Fees

VTU offers courses through its Belagavi campus departments, its three constituent colleges, and its large group of affiliated engineering colleges in Karnataka. Its own departments follow government fee levels, while affiliated private colleges charge fees approved under VTU norms.

For B.Tech at VTU-affiliated private engineering colleges, the four-year fee ranges from INR 4,50,000 to INR 5,52,580. The amount varies by college and branch. Branches such as CSE, AI and ML, and Data Science usually have higher approved fees than many core engineering branches. Across affiliated colleges, VTU covers 37 undergraduate engineering disciplines and 96 PG disciplines, including Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Quantum Computing, Robotics and AI, Marine Engineering, and Electric Vehicle Technology.

VTU Admission Process

VTU admissions mainly move through entrance tests and counselling run by state-level bodies. B.Tech admission uses KCET for government quota seats and COMEDK UGET for private, NRI, and management quota seats. VTU departments and constituent colleges follow KEA counselling. VTU conducts its own entrance test only for Ph.D. admission through VTU-ETR.

B.Tech Admission (KCET Route)

Karnataka domicile students who qualify KCET can apply for government quota seats, which cover 65% of intake in government, aided, and private VTU-affiliated colleges. KEA conducts centralised counselling. Students must pass 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics, with at least 45% marks. SC and ST students need 40% marks.

• KCET eligibility: Students must have Karnataka domicile or origin and must have studied Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics in 10+2.
• KEA counselling: The counselling is held in multiple online rounds. Students submit college and branch preferences, and allotment depends on KCET rank and category.

B.Tech Admission (COMEDK Route)

Students from outside Karnataka, and Karnataka students seeking management or private quota seats, can apply through COMEDK UGET, which means Under Graduate Entrance Test. COMEDK counselling is used for management quota and NRI seats in VTU-affiliated private engineering colleges. Students need 10+2 with PCM and a valid COMEDK score.

M.Tech, MBA, and MCA Admission

For PG seats in government and government-aided institutions, admission is based on Karnataka PGCET, which means Post Graduate Common Entrance Test. GATE-qualified students get preference for M.Tech allotment. Students without GATE scores are considered through PGCET scores. MBA admission may also use KMAT Karnataka, CMAT, and MAT scores. MCA applicants need a UG degree with Mathematics.

Ph.D. Admission

VTU uses VTU-ETR, the Entrance Test for Research, for Ph.D. admission. Applicants need a Master’s degree with at least 60% marks. Reserved category students need 55% marks. Candidates with GATE, UGC-NET, CSIR-NET, or SLET qualification do not need to take VTU-ETR. Ph.D. programmes are offered in engineering, sciences, and management at VTU departments and approved research centres in affiliated colleges.

VTU Rankings

VTU is listed in the 101 to 150 band in NIRF University Rankings 2025. In NIRF Engineering 2025, it is in the 151 to 200 band. It also holds Rank 50 among State Public Universities in NIRF 2025. The university has NAAC B+ Grade accreditation and is approved by UGC, AICTE, and the Council of Architecture.

Some VTU-affiliated colleges appear higher in NIRF Engineering rankings than VTU as a university because VTU’s own NIRF score covers only its constituent departments and colleges. Autonomous colleges under VTU, including NMIT, DSCE, and other Bengaluru colleges, may be ranked separately at the college level. VTU is mainly known for the size of its network and for standardising engineering education across Karnataka.

VTU Scholarships

Students studying at VTU and at VTU-affiliated colleges can apply for Karnataka state government and central government scholarships if they meet the category and income rules.

VTU Campus and Infrastructure

VTU has its main campus in Belagavi, also known as Belgaum, Karnataka. Its four regional centres at Belagavi, Bengaluru, Kalaburagi, and Mysuru handle examination work, academic administration, and student services for more than 200 affiliated colleges in their zones.

The Belagavi campus includes academic departments, a central library, research laboratories, and the administrative headquarters of the university. VTU was the first university in India to introduce a Digital Evaluation System in 2011-12 for answer paper assessment. It also introduced a Question Paper Delivery System, which removed paper-based logistics across affiliated colleges. The university also operates a centralised online learning portal and a Skill Development Centre that works with industry partners to improve graduate employability.

UBDT Engineering College at Davangere is the largest constituent college of VTU. It has established engineering programmes and industry connections in Karnataka’s manufacturing corridor. Across its campus and affiliated college network, VTU supports more than 300,000 students, while the Belagavi campus mainly hosts doctoral researchers and postgraduate programmes in direct VTU departments.

VTU vs Anna University vs AKTU

VTU, Anna University, and APJ Abdul Kalam Technical University, also called AKTU, are major state technical affiliating universities in India. Each university functions as the main affiliating body for engineering colleges in its state, so students often compare them while checking admission routes, university rules, and engineering options across states.

Anna University is ahead on NIRF rank, NAAC grade, and the number of affiliated colleges. Its constituent campuses, including CEG Chennai and MIT Chrompet, are among India’s preferred engineering options. AKTU in Uttar Pradesh has the highest number of affiliated engineering colleges by count in India. VTU stands out for early digital evaluation, its focused network across Karnataka’s industrial belt including Bengaluru, Belagavi, Davangere, and Hubballi, and its 46 autonomous colleges that can take part separately in NIRF rankings.
