NIT Silchar Admission Dates 2027

JEE Main scores and JoSAA centralised counselling determine admission to the B.Tech programmes. The schedule for the 2027-28 cycle is tentative and follows the pattern of earlier years. NTA and JoSAA will publish the confirmed dates on their official portals.

NIT Silchar Courses and Fees

Students can choose from 6 B.Tech branches, more than 20 M.Tech specialisations, 3 MBA specialisations and 3 M.Sc subjects. Every department also offers Ph.D research opportunities. The following table lists the programme duration, entry requirements and total fee for General Category students.

The total B.Tech fee under the NRI quota is INR 32.00 Lakhs for 4 years. Among the B.Tech branches, CSE regularly has the highest average placement package and the most competitive JoSAA closing rank.

NIT Silchar Admission Process

NIT Silchar selects students through programme-specific entrance examinations. B.Tech, M.Tech and M.Sc applicants enter through centralised counselling, while the institute conducts further selection for MBA and Ph.D applicants.

B.Tech Admission

Applicants must meet all three conditions for B.Tech admission:

• Complete 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.
• Secure at least 75% aggregate marks, or 65% for SC, ST and PwD applicants.
• Obtain a valid JEE Main score in the relevant qualifying year.

The B.Tech selection process follows these steps:

1. Appear for JEE Main and receive a valid score.
2. Register for JoSAA centralised counselling and enter the preferred institute and branch choices.
3. Review the mock allotments and change the submitted choices if needed.
4. Take part in the six main seat-allotment rounds.
5. Accept the allotted seat and complete physical reporting at the institute.

JoSAA places NIT Silchar within the Northeast quota system. Applicants from Assam and other Northeast states compete through a separate State quota pool, alongside the Home State and Outside State pools. CSE and ECE generally record the most competitive closing ranks.

M.Tech and M.Sc Admission

A valid GATE score is required for M.Tech, and seats are assigned through CCMT centralised counselling. Admission to the M.Sc courses in Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics is based on IIT JAM through CCMN counselling. M.Sc applicants must hold a B.Sc degree with at least 60% marks.

MBA and Ph.D Admission

The MBA offers Finance, Human Resource Management and Marketing specialisations. Applicants need a valid CAT or MAT score and must attend a group discussion and personal interview at NITS.

Ph.D selection takes place twice each year. Applicants must qualify through GATE, UGC-NET or CSIR-NET and then attend an interview conducted by the relevant department. GATE-qualified M.Tech holders receive an MHRD fellowship of INR 31,000 per month.

NIT Silchar Placements

In the 2025 placement season, NIT Silchar's Training and Placement Cell recorded more than 700 offers and placed 601 students. The highest package stood at INR 60 LPA, while the overall average was INR 12.25 LPA.

Computer Science and Engineering achieved the highest branch-wise average of INR 13.34 LPA. Recruiters from product development, IT services and BFSI included Amazon Web Services, Microsoft, Goldman Sachs, Google, Cisco, Adobe, HP, Commvault, Accenture and ICICI Bank.

Graduates from Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, and Electronics and Instrumentation engineering also join PSUs such as ONGC, NHPC and BHEL, public sector banks, and medium-sized engineering companies. Internship drives are organised by the placement cell during every academic year.

NIT Silchar Rankings

NIT Silchar reached Rank 50 in the NIRF Engineering 2025 list, an improvement that placed it among the country's top 50 engineering institutions. Its Rank 97 in the NIRF Overall 2025 category also makes it one of the few NITs within the top 100 institutions across all categories in India.

NIT Silchar Scholarships

Eligible NIT Silchar students may receive support through central and state government scholarship programmes. Some schemes are meant specifically for students from Northeast India, while others consider academic merit, category or family income.

NIT Silchar Campus and Infrastructure

NIT Silchar has a fully residential 625-acre campus in the Barak Valley region of Silchar, Assam. It is among the larger NIT campuses in Northeast India.

Facilities include separate boys' and girls' hostels, academic blocks, research laboratories, a central library, canteens and a sports complex. Its green, self-contained setting differs from the more crowded environment of metropolitan campuses. Students from Assam and the wider Northeast form a significant part of the campus community.

Research is supported through Ph.D programmes in every engineering and science department. Road links connect the institute with Silchar city, and Silchar (Kumbhirgram) Airport is the nearest airport.

NIT Silchar vs NIT Durgapur vs NIT Agartala

Students considering government NITs in East and Northeast India commonly compare NIT Silchar with NIT Durgapur in West Bengal and NIT Agartala in Tripura. All three institutions use JoSAA counselling and draw applicants from overlapping regions of East and Northeast India.

NIT Durgapur has a slightly higher NIRF Engineering position and benefits from placement access to the industrial areas of Durgapur and Kolkata in West Bengal. NIT Silchar's NIRF Overall 2025 Rank 97 shows its performance across disciplines. Although NIT Agartala has a lower engineering rank, it serves a strong applicant base from Tripura through the Northeast quota. The three institutes share the JoSAA admission system and follow central government fee norms.
