KGMU Admission Dates 2026

KGMU admission for the 2026-27 session depends on NEET UG 2026 for MBBS and NEET PG 2026 for MD/MS/PG Diploma courses. Out of 250 MBBS seats, 213 seats fall under the 85% UP State Quota managed by DGME-UP, while 37 seats fall under the 15% All India Quota handled by MCC-MoHFW. Both counselling processes are active.

KGMU Courses and Fees

KGMU runs courses through four faculties: Medical Sciences, Dental Sciences, Nursing, and Allied and Healthcare Sciences. Its fees are charged at government-rate levels, which makes it one of the most affordable medical universities among the top 8 in India.

The MD course at KGMU includes more than 30 specialities, such as Anaesthesia, Biochemistry, Community Medicine, Dermatology, Emergency Medicine, Forensic Medicine, General Medicine, Microbiology, Orthopaedics, Paediatrics, Pathology, Psychiatry, Radiology, and Surgery. The DM/MCh super-speciality courses cover Cardiology, Clinical Haematology, Gastroenterology, Geriatric Mental Health, Neurology, Critical Care, Pulmonary Medicine, and major surgical super-specialities.

KGMU Admission Process

KGMU follows a centralised admission system based on NEET. The university does not hold a separate entrance test for MBBS admission. Selection is made through NEET rank and category, and there are no management quota or NRI quota MBBS seats.

MBBS Admission

For MBBS, students must pass 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology (PCB) with at least 50% aggregate. The minimum is 45% for SC/ST/OBC candidates. A valid NEET UG score is also required.

• Take NEET UG, which is conducted by NTA every year in May
• For 15% AIQ seats, register on the MCC counselling portal and add KGMU in the choice list
• For 85% UP State Quota seats, register on the DGME-UP portal after the UP State Merit List is released
• Accept the allotted seat and pay the joining fee within the given time
• Report with original documents for verification and final admission

As per NEET UG 2025 trends, the expected closing rank for KGMU MBBS under the AIQ General Category is 1,600 to 1,900 AIR. For the UP State Quota General Category, the expected closing rank on the UP State Merit List is 900 to 1,100.

MD / MS Admission

Admission to MD and MS requires an MBBS degree, completed internship, and a valid NEET PG score. Seats are allotted through NBE-conducted MD/MS counselling for AIQ and DGME-UP state PG counselling for the state quota. KGMU has 450 postgraduate seats across 30+ disciplines, making it one of India’s largest PG medical training institutions.

DM / M.Ch Admission

DM and M.Ch admissions are based on NEET SS scores. Seats in these super-speciality courses are limited. Applicants must have completed MD or MS in the relevant parent speciality. NBE conducts the counselling for DM/M.Ch seats at the central level.

KGMU Placements and Career Outcomes

KGMU does not run placements like a regular campus recruitment process. MBBS students usually follow the government medical college career route. Most graduates prepare for NEET PG and move into MD/MS specialisation, while others enter government service, private practice, or research.

KGMU has a strong alumni network in the medical field. Its notable alumni include cardiac surgeon Dr. Naresh Trehan, former ICMR Director General Dr. Balram Bhargava, and ophthalmologist Dr. Sanduk Ruit. KGMU Rankings

KGMU is counted among the leading government medical institutions in India. It has stayed in the top 10 of the NIRF Medical rankings for several years. Its Dental ranking also reflects the standing of the Faculty of Dental Sciences, one of the oldest dental schools in North India.

KGMU is the only government medical institution in Uttar Pradesh with NAAC A++ accreditation. A++ is the highest quality band given by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council to Indian universities.

KGMU Campus and Infrastructure

KGMU has a 24.7-acre urban campus on Shah Mina Road, Chowk, Lucknow. The campus is in a central part of the city and is connected by road and metro. It has been active since 1905 and has grown its academic and clinical facilities over time.

The teaching hospital attached to KGMU has 4,000 functional beds, more than 80 clinical departments, and a Level I Trauma Centre. It receives more than 5,000 outpatient visits every day and works as the main referral centre for complex cases from Uttar Pradesh and nearby states.

Academic facilities include a central library, postgraduate hostels, skill labs for clinical training, simulation centres, and research laboratories. The university also runs a 24/7 Poison Information Centre and the KGMU Eye Bank, both of which are nationally recognised specialised services.

KGMU vs GSVM Medical College vs Gandhi Medical College

Students from Uttar Pradesh and central India who qualify in the NEET UG range needed for KGMU may also look at GSVM Medical College, Kanpur and Gandhi Medical College, Bhopal. GSVM is a senior UP state medical college, while Gandhi Medical College is one of the oldest government medical colleges in Madhya Pradesh. All three are government-funded institutions with government-rate fees.

KGMU is ahead in NIRF rank, patient load, postgraduate seat count, and institutional history. GSVM Medical College is another major state medical college in Uttar Pradesh and offers a similar government-fee route in Kanpur. Gandhi Medical College is usually preferred by Madhya Pradesh domicile students and serves the Madhya Pradesh government healthcare catchment.
