IIT Dharwad Admission Dates 2027

Applicants planning to enter IIT Dharwad in 2027 must first qualify through JEE Main before appearing for JEE Advanced. Seat choices and allotment for eligible students will then take place through JoSAA.

IIT Dharwad Courses and Fees

Study options at IIT Dharwad include eight B.Tech branches, four BS subjects, one BS+MS dual degree, seven M.Tech specialisations, four M.Sc subjects, two Ex.M.Tech tracks and PhD programmes in all departments. For B.Tech, the eight-semester total includes tuition of INR 1,00,000 per semester, applicable charges and deposits.

Among the B.Tech choices, CSE and Mathematics and Computing receive the strongest competition and attract the best JEE Advanced ranks at the institute. Chemical and Biochemical Engineering is a distinct option within the group of newer IITs. Students interested in science research rather than an engineering career can consider the pure-science BS programmes.

IIT Dharwad Admission Process

Admission rules depend on the level of study. Undergraduate seats are allocated through the national JEE Advanced and JoSAA system, while postgraduate and doctoral applicants follow the examination or selection route set for their programme.

B.Tech / BS / BS+MS Admission

IIT Dharwad does not conduct a separate entrance test or require an institute-level application for B.Tech, BS or BS+MS admission. Applicants qualify through JEE Advanced and receive seats through centralised JoSAA counselling under the regular IIT admission system.

• Eligibility: Applicants need Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics in Class 12, with at least 75% aggregate marks. The minimum is 65% for SC/ST/PwD applicants. They must also rank within the top 2,50,000 candidates in JEE Main.
• Age condition: General-category applicants must have been born on or after October 1, 2001. Relaxation applies to SC/ST/PwD candidates.
• Steps: Qualify in JEE Main, register for and take JEE Advanced, receive the rank, register with JoSAA, enter course choices, participate in as many as 6 seat-allotment rounds, report to IIT Dharwad, complete document checks and pay the required fee.

In JoSAA 2026 Round 1, General-category CSE closed at rank 7,426. The corresponding closing ranks were 8,996 for ECE and 12,908 for Mechanical Engineering. In the General category, Civil Infrastructure Engineering, Chemical and Biochemical Engineering, Engineering Physics, and Mathematics and Computing closed at ranks higher than the CSE closing rank.

M.Tech and M.Sc Admission

A valid GATE score and the COAP, or Common Offer Acceptance Portal, are used for M.Tech admission. Applicants need a relevant B.Tech, B.E. or M.Sc degree with at least 60% aggregate marks, reduced to 55% for SC/ST/PwD candidates. M.Sc selection is based on IIT JAM, the Joint Admission Test for MSc, along with the subject requirements of the chosen course. For PhD admission, IIT Dharwad conducts a written test and interview in December and May every year.

IIT Dharwad Placements

The Training and Placement Cell coordinates recruitment at IIT Dharwad. The highest offer in the 2024-25 season was INR 56 LPA, while UG students received an average package of INR 14.65 LPA. NIRF 2025 data records a median package of INR 11.62 LPA for students who completed four-year UG programmes in 2023-24.

Recruitment participation has grown as additional batches have graduated from this young IIT. Technology, financial services and research organisations form the main hiring groups. CSE and EEE students receive the highest offers. Students in core areas such as Mechanical Engineering and Chemical Engineering find roles in PSUs, manufacturing companies and core engineering firms.

The institute expects its placement results to rise as more groups complete their studies at the permanent campus. Its research setting and mentorship from IIT Bombay also support graduates interested in higher education, research and development positions, and corporate careers.

IIT Dharwad Rankings

National ranking results show IIT Dharwad’s progress since it opened. Its NIRF Engineering position improved from the 101-150 band in 2024 to 77 in 2025. The change reflects growth in faculty strength, research work and placement performance.

IIT Dharwad was founded in 2016 and began operating from its permanent campus only in March 2023. It is not yet included in international systems such as QS and THE, which generally expect an institutional history of more than 10 years. Its present standing is therefore measured most clearly through NIRF participation and results.

IIT Dharwad Scholarships

Category and annual family income determine tuition support at IIT Dharwad under the common IIT fee concession rules. The approved reduction is applied to the tuition amount during semester fee payment.

The waivers cover tuition only. Every student must still pay hostel, mess, medical and other charges in full. Eligible learners from specified minority communities and other categories may also apply for schemes offered through the National Scholarship Portal.

IIT Dharwad Campus and Infrastructure

IIT Dharwad’s permanent home is a 470-acre campus at Chikkamalligawad, 7 km from Dharwad city and 15 km from Hubli. The Prime Minister formally inaugurated it on 12 March 2023. It is described as India’s first green and smart IIT, with solar power, sustainable water management and smart systems built into the campus.

Facilities include teaching blocks, research laboratories for different departments, a central library, computer centres, innovation and incubation cells, sports areas and centres for student activities. Students can live in hostels on the campus, in keeping with the residential system followed by IITs. With 866 students enrolled, the community is smaller and more closely connected than those at older IITs.

Northern Karnataka’s Dharwad district is known for classical music, Kannada literature and a temperate climate. The Hubli-Dharwad twin cities give the campus community access to healthcare, rail services and Hubballi Airport.

IIT Dharwad vs IIT Bhilai vs IIT Goa

General-category students holding JEE Advanced ranks from 7,000 to 15,000 often compare IIT Dharwad with IIT Bhilai in Chhattisgarh and IIT Goa. The three institutes were established in 2016, belong to the same group of newer IITs, and use JEE Advanced followed by JoSAA counselling for admission.

Within this group, IIT Dharwad holds a verified NIRF Engineering rank of 77 for 2025. Its permanent campus and mentorship by IIT Bombay have supported faster institutional development. IIT Goa provides a coastal setting in one of India’s smallest states, while IIT Bhilai is close to Raipur and serves Central India. Each awards an IIT degree and follows the JEE Advanced admission route.
