GATE-qualified M.Tech students receive a Ministry of Education stipend of INR 12,400 per month, which helps meet programme costs. Their M.Tech education is substantially subsidised. The higher B.Tech charges for Geological Engineering and Geophysical Technology reflect the specialised laboratories and field infrastructure used by these courses.
The required entrance examination depends on the course. Admissions to the 2026-27 batch have concluded: B.Tech selection used JEE Advanced 2026 with JoSAA counselling, M.Tech used GATE 2026, and MBA used CAT 2025. The 2027-28 session follows the national entrance examination calendar.
| Programme | Selection route |
|---|---|

JoSAA, the Joint Seat Allocation Authority, allocates B.Tech seats using the JEE Advanced merit list. IIT (ISM) Dhanbad conducts neither an additional entrance test nor an interview for this admission route.
The online admission steps are:
Applicants need a valid score in the GATE paper relevant to their chosen discipline. Applications go through CCMT, or Centralised Counselling for M.Tech. Departments allocate seats using the normalised GATE score and the number of seats available.
CAT scores determine which applicants reach the next stage of MBA selection. Shortlisted students attend a Written Ability Test (WAT), Group Discussion (GD) and Personal Interview (PI). The expected General Category CAT cutoff is 90 to 95 percentile.
Applicants to Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and Computing, Applied Geology, and Applied Geophysics take JAM. This national entrance examination is conducted by the IITs. Eligibility requires a relevant bachelor's degree with at least 55% marks.
IIT (ISM) Dhanbad falls in the middle group of IITs by rank. For General Category B.Tech applicants, Computer Science usually requires a lower numerical JEE Advanced rank than Mining or Petroleum Engineering. Closing ranks change each year with examination performance and seat availability.
| Course | Examination and category | Typical or expected cutoff |
|---|---|---|
| Computer Science and Engineering | JEE Advanced, General Category | Typical closing rank: 3,500 to 5,000 |
| Mining Engineering | JEE Advanced, General Category | Typical closing rank: 8,000 to 15,000 |
| Petroleum Engineering | JEE Advanced, General Category | Typical closing rank: 8,000 to 15,000 |
| MBA | CAT, General Category | Expected cutoff: 90 to 95 percentile |
The wider closing-rank ranges in Mining and Petroleum Engineering allow students across a broader part of the JEE Advanced rank list to seek admission.
A Computer Science student secured an international offer of INR 83 LPA, the highest package in the 2025 placement season. Across branches, the average salary ranged from INR 16.5 LPA to INR 17.6 LPA. The institute's overall placement rate reached 81.76%. LPA means lakh rupees per annum.
| Placement measure | 2025 figure |
|---|---|
| Highest offer | INR 83 LPA, international role for a Computer Science student |
| Average package across branches | INR 16.5 LPA to INR 17.6 LPA |

As a think tank for 11 Indian government ministries, IIT (ISM) has access to PSU recruitment networks beyond those available at other IITs. Its links with ONGC, Coal India and other public sector employers particularly support mining and geoscience students. These companies offer competitive salaries without service bonds.
NIRF 2025 placed IIT (ISM) Dhanbad among India's top 15 engineering institutions. It also ranked the institute in the Overall and Management categories. NIRF began ranking the institution when it gained IIT status, and its Engineering position has improved steadily since then.
| Ranking organisation | Category | Rank in 2025 |
|---|---|---|
| NIRF | Engineering | #15 |
| NIRF | Overall | #35 |
| NIRF | Management | #48 |
IIT (ISM) Dhanbad does not take part in NAAC assessment, conducted by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council. IITs hold Institute of National Importance status and follow their own quality framework under the Ministry of Education. Its Engineering rank of 15 places it above several IITs founded after 2010.
Dhanbad's location in Jharkhand's coal belt places the institute close to major Indian mining and mineral-processing operations. Its main site covers 218 acres, while a new 227-acre greenfield campus is under development. Dedicated school buildings house the institute's 18 academic departments.
First-year B.Tech students must stay in institute hostels. Rooms are allotted after their admission is confirmed.
Natural resources, mining and geosciences are the areas in which IIT (ISM) formally advises 11 Government of India ministries. This role connects research groups directly with ONGC, Coal India, NMDC, the Geological Survey of India (GSI), and the Central Mine Planning and Design Institute (CMPDI). These links support joint research and student projects.
Financial support includes the standard IIT schemes for B.Tech, M.Tech and PhD students, institute awards and company-funded scholarships. B.Tech students whose annual family income is below INR 5 Lakhs can receive Merit cum Means (MCM) support with a monthly stipend of INR 1,000. Income-based support includes full fee waivers; the scheme-specific benefits and conditions are listed below.
| Scholarship or support | Eligibility conditions | Financial benefit |
|---|---|---|
| Free Studentship, full fee waiver | Annual family income below INR 1 Lakh | 100% tuition fee waiver and a stipend of INR 1,000 per month |

I choose this course iam interested in electrical engineering so i have taken this course faculty qualification is masters phd level and teaching level is good and in exams there will be mid term examination and end term examination difficulty level is very high because in iit high standards question paper will be given
For placements eligibility minimum 6 cgpa is good for job opportunities highest package is 1 cr and average package is 6 lakhs in this campus Percentage of students getting placements more than 75 percent per year they are getting after the degree
Read Full ReviewIt is totally based on my rank which I secured in jee advance exam . The academics are upto date and the faculty will teach us in practical manner .The labs will give us more knowledge about the subject. Exams were connected twice for a semester like mid and end . The difficulty level is medium to hard based on the professor interest. But the subject we gained here is useful for us in many ways and in many situations in our working environment.
The eligibility criteria is the student must maintain cgpa above 7.5 . The companies offered are like accenture, torrent power, Gujarat mineral development corporation, Special blast limited energy etc.. The package offered is approximately 12 to 15 lpa . The percentage of students getting placements are 60 to 80 % . But nowadays it is increasing. My plan is also get a job in SBL energy . The highest package is 40lpa.the average package is 12lpa.
Read Full ReviewThe curriculum is good , we will have enough time to study for scoring good grades, faculties are good as they teach well ,The semester exams will be moderated to tough but some exams would be easy based on your branch.
The eligibility criteria for sitting in placement is 7 cumulative grade point average.IIT (ISM) Dhanbad placements attract companies like Microsoft, Google, Amazon, IBM, Tata Steel, and many more, offering diverse opportunities for students. The highest package in our campus is 59 LPA and average package is 21.17 LPA.The placement rate is 70 percent.
Read Full ReviewIn faculty Some are good some are strict. Course curriculum nice for some branches and field trips are also included so as to get proper knowledge apart from that labs are also done for better practical knowledge.
It's good with 90 percent placement. Companies come for both core and non core roles apart from that it's good for person if one in interested in mining and other core branches and non core roles also .
Read Full ReviewAcademics and all are very decent. Proffs depends branch to branch and can be nice to sometimes not tolerable enough but seniors and clubs are there for your career which would ultimately help you giving that push.
Anyone getting more than 6cgpa is eligible for on campus placement. The on campus placement is decent with highest package going to 70 lakhs. Off campus placement has been till 2.5 crore. And around 70-80% people get placed.
Read Full ReviewCourse curriculum is based on the New Education Policies. There are compulsory , departmental elective , open department elective, management related courses and humanities courses offered in the study of 4 years..
Placements at IIT (ISM) Dhanbad are strong, with top recruiters like Qualcomm, Texas Instruments, and JLR. Eligibility requires a minimum CGPA. The highest package exceeds ?50 LPA, with an average of ?15-20 LPA. Over 80% secure offers. I plan to secure job through the college placements.
Read Full ReviewB.Tech in Mechanical at IIT ISM was the best thing I could get at my JEE rank. Branch change is also relatively easy here as compared to rest of the IITs. Faculties here are extremely qualified. Some of proffs have their PHDs from foreign universities like Stanford, MIT. Grading system followed here is realtive i.e. 25% of the classes gets A/A+ and rest receive B+/B/C+ etc.
Placements here are not at par with top 7 iits. Highest package received this year was 66 LPA. Top recruiters include SquarePoint, Google, Flipkart, PhonePe, SLB, Chevron, Bajaj. Avg package is around 12 LPA and Lowest package received was 6 LPA. This year around 60-65% are only placed. I had received and offer from PhonePe and will be joining them after my degree.
Read Full ReviewVery honestly i say this " i choose this course because i can't get any better opportunity in IITs". But after getting this course i feel that thre are great oppourtunity in foreign developed countries. Faculties are very qualified some had done their Phd from universities like Oxford ,IIT Bombay etc and They are good at teaching(mostly, some have accent problems). There are mid term exam(30% weightage) and End term exam(50%) , between then profs can 2 quizzes or assignment (20%).Their is relative grading, and difficulty level, question pattern all depends upon profs.
Placement opportunities are good compared from private colleges but not as good as top IITs. Eligibility depends on companies some have CGPA criteria some has branch restrictions . Google Microsoft Amazon Goldman Sachs Walmart etc recruit ,the on campus highest package is around 53 lpa and the average is different for different departments (mostly it range from 12 lpa to 30 lpa) for lower branches most companies offer around 8-10 lpa in core sector. around 80-85 % students were placed ,numbers are low for some departments but some have numbers like 95-96 . I am going to my core sector. for internships around 300-350 students were recruited ,Mncs mentioned above come for internships also it rang mainly from 40k to 150k some provide more than that some are low in it .
Read Full ReviewComing to academics we have the best professors i have choosen mechanical engineering in this college for me personally i feel very difficult because it has more depth in this course and difficulty level.
