IIT Guwahati Admission Dates 2027

For B.Tech admission, students first qualify JEE Main and then appear for JEE Advanced. Final seat allotment is done through JoSAA counselling. The 2027-28 cycle is expected to follow the regular IIT admission route.

IIT Guwahati Courses and Fees

IIT Guwahati offers UG, PG and doctoral courses in engineering, science, design, management and humanities. UG programme fees are the same across the main undergraduate courses, while PG fees differ by course type.

B.Tech branches include AI and Data Science, Mathematics and Computing, Chemical Science and Technology and the standard engineering streams. The Mehta Family School of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence and the School of Health Science and Technology run specialised interdisciplinary programmes apart from the regular department-based courses.

IIT Guwahati Admission Process

IIT Guwahati uses the common IIT admission system for major programmes. B.Tech admission is controlled by the Joint Admission Board, and JoSAA manages seat allotment. Other courses use exams such as UCEED, GATE, IIT JAM, CAT, CEED, UGC-NET, CSIR-NET or IITG's own selection process.

B.Tech and B.Des (Undergraduate)

B.Tech seats are given through JEE Advanced ranks and JoSAA counselling. B.Des admission is based on UCEED score.

• Students need Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics and at least 75% marks. The minimum is 65% for SC, ST and PwD students.
• For B.Tech, students must first qualify JEE Main and then appear for JEE Advanced.
• JoSAA conducts six seat allotment rounds, where students can float or freeze their seats.
• After accepting a seat, candidates report to IITG for document checking and fee payment.

M.Tech (Postgraduate Engineering)

M.Tech admission at IIT Guwahati is based on a valid GATE score in the related discipline. The institute uses the GATE score to prepare the merit list and then conducts an interview.

• Applicants need a B.Tech / B.E. degree in the relevant engineering branch with 60% aggregate. For SC, ST and PwD students, the minimum is 55%.
• Sponsored candidates working in industry or government can apply with a relaxed GATE requirement.
• M.Tech students with valid GATE scores can get an MHRD Teaching Assistantship of INR 12,400 per month.

M.Sc and MA

M.Sc seats in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics and Computing are filled through IIT JAM. MA admission in Development Studies and Liberal Arts follows a separate departmental selection process.

• For IIT JAM based admission, students need a bachelor's degree in the relevant science subject with 55% marks. The minimum is 50% for SC, ST and PwD students.
• M.Sc seat allotment is done centrally through the JAM Admission Portal (JOAPS).

MBA

The School of Business at IITG admits MBA students through CAT. Shortlisted students attend a Written Ability Test (WAT) and Personal Interview (PI) at IITG.

• Applicants need a bachelor's degree with 60% aggregate. The minimum is 55% for SC, ST and PwD students.
• Work experience is not compulsory, but it carries weight during shortlisting.
• The usual CAT cutoff for IITG MBA is in the 90 to 95 percentile range for General Category students.

PhD

PhD admission takes place twice a year, in the January and July sessions. Candidates may apply with GATE, UGC-NET or CSIR-NET scores. Some departments also hold an IITG admission test and interview.

• Applicants need a master's degree in the relevant subject with 60% marks. The minimum is 55% for SC, ST and PwD candidates.
• Selected PhD scholars receive a Research Assistantship of INR 31,000 to INR 35,000 per month.

IIT Guwahati Cutoffs

IIT Guwahati B.Tech cutoffs are based on JEE Advanced ranks and JoSAA counselling rounds. In 2026 Round 1, Computer Science and Engineering had the most competitive closing rank among the stated branches.

IIT Guwahati Placements

IIT Guwahati placements usually run from October to April. In 2024, 1,124 students were placed by 260 companies, and the placement rate was 71%. The highest package was INR 2.05 CPA, the average package was INR 36.17 LPA and the median package was INR 30.75 LPA.

IIT Guwahati Scholarships

IIT Guwahati Campus and Infrastructure

Students considering IIT Guwahati for mid-ranked branches often compare it with IIT Roorkee and IIT BHU Varanasi. These three IITs have strong B.Tech infrastructure and attract similar JEE Advanced rank ranges for many branches.

IIT Roorkee has a longer academic history and usually ranks above IIT Guwahati in NIRF Engineering.
