MAT Books: A Section-wise Shortlist

Use this shortlist to fill a specific gap. AIMA does not prescribe these books; they are selected for the subjects and question types they cover.

CAT books can help with shared maths, English and reasoning topics. For full-paper practice, choose mocks with the current MAT section mix and timing.

Language Comprehension: Grammar, Vocabulary and Reading

English preparation needs more than a vocabulary list. A student who understands every word in a passage may still choose an answer that the passage does not support. A different student may lose marks because of grammar or unfamiliar word usage. Use the book that addresses the actual error.

Wren & Martin for grammar gaps

High School English Grammar and Composition covers sentence construction, usage, comprehension and composition. Use it as a reference when sentence-correction practice reveals a repeated problem, such as subject-verb agreement or pronoun use. The publisher also sells a separate answer key and self-practice book, so check what your chosen edition includes.

Word Power Made Easy for vocabulary

Norman Lewis's book develops word knowledge through explanations and revision exercises. Work through those exercises and use the words in context. It is a vocabulary resource, not a complete MAT Language Comprehension course: it cannot replace timed passage questions.

Arun Sharma and Meenakshi Upadhyay for reading practice

The 2026 VARC courseware includes reading-skill chapters, a starter pack and graded passage practice. Begin with the starter material if you struggle to identify the main point or distinguish an inference from an unsupported claim. For each wrong answer, return to the passage and identify the sentence that rules the option out.

Mathematical Skills: Build Methods Before Shortcuts

R.S. Aggarwal's Quantitative Aptitude for Competitive Examinations is a broad aptitude reference with explanations and practice. Use its contents to locate the numerical topics you need; it is not a promise that every chapter has the same importance in MAT.

Start a weak topic with solved examples, then attempt questions without looking at the method. Keep calculation errors separate from concept errors. Repeating a formula will not fix a mistake caused by choosing the wrong base in a percentage question.

Practice example: A price rises from INR 800 to INR 1,000. The increase is 25%, because INR 200 is compared with INR 800. Returning from INR 1,000 to INR 800 is a 20% decrease. The same difference produces a different percentage when the base changes.

Use a second maths book only when the first lacks the explanations or question types you need. Switching books after every difficult chapter often leaves the same arithmetic gaps unresolved.

Intelligence and Critical Reasoning: Choose the Right Exercises

A Modern Approach to Verbal & Non-Verbal Reasoning includes general mental ability and logical-deduction material. Its contents cover areas such as series, analogies, coding, relationships, statement-assumption questions, arguments and conclusions. That makes it a useful source of topic practice, but it also serves many exams beyond MAT.

For arrangements and relationships, draw the minimum diagram needed and check each condition before answering. For statement-based questions, use only the information given. An option can sound sensible in everyday life and still fail to follow from the statement.

Do not treat every chapter of a large multi-exam reasoning book as an equal MAT priority. Compare the exercises with MAT sample questions, then use current-format tests to judge whether you can recognise and solve those questions in a mixed paper.

Data Analysis and Sufficiency: Two Skills to Practise

Arun Sharma's Courseware on Data Interpretation for CAT provides data-based practice. Select manageable sets first and read chart headings, units and time periods before calculating. A table in thousands and a graph in lakhs can be individually clear but easy to combine incorrectly.

Data sufficiency asks a different question: is the information enough to determine the answer? You may not need to calculate the final value. Test the statements separately before combining them, and follow the answer-option convention printed with that question.

Practice example: Is a positive integer x even? Statement 1: x is divisible by 4. Statement 2: x is greater than 10. Statement 1 alone answers the question. Statement 2 does not, because 11 and 12 both satisfy it but give different answers.

Practise data sufficiency separately from graphs and tables: these questions ask whether the given statements are enough to solve a problem.

Economic and Business Environment: Books Plus Current Reading

Manorama Yearbook 2026 can provide background reference, while its current-affairs service offers dated updates. A printed annual cannot cover events that happen after publication. Pair it with recent business and economy reporting rather than memorising an old yearbook cover to cover.

For revision, organise notes around an event, the organisation or institution involved, and the term needed to understand it. For example, a monetary-policy report is easier to retain when repo rate and inflation are understood, not just the date of an announcement. Keep changing figures dated in your notes.

The section's current name is Economic and Business Environment. An older resource headed Indian and Global Environment may contain useful background questions, but its title alone does not prove that it matches the current content focus.

Online Resources and MAT Mock Tests

Books explain methods; full-length tests show how those methods hold up across the paper. AIMA's current structure has 30 questions in each of five sections, with 0.25 mark deducted for an incorrect answer. Check these settings before using a test as a current-format mock.

The MAT previous-year question-paper archive can supplement book exercises. It carries older-pattern descriptions, so use it for historical practice rather than to set the length of a 2026 mock.

After a test, record unanswered questions, incorrect answers and questions solved correctly but slowly. Return to the relevant book chapter only for the issue you found. A wrong ratio calculation, a missed qualifier in an English passage and an unsupported reasoning assumption need different fixes.

How to Choose a Smaller, More Useful Book Set

An older edition may be enough for stable concepts if its explanations are clear and its solutions reliable. Spend on a replacement when the problem is outdated test format, missing topics, unusable answers or expired digital access. For e-books, use publisher-authorised copies; a free sample chapter and an unauthorised full-book scan are not the same thing.
