It is one of India's 31 National Institutes of Technology and is administered by the Ministry of Education. The institute is recognised as an Institute of National Importance under the NIT Act 2007. It also functions as a Deemed University and can award its own degrees.
NIT Goa was placed in the 101 to 150 band in the NIRF Engineering 2025 rankings. It participates in NIRF as an Institute of National Importance. Its 114-acre campus is on the Kottamoll Plateau in the Cuncolim Municipal Area, Salcete Taluka, South Goa. The campus offers a scenic setting and is within an hour of Panaji.

The fee for an NRI student in the four-year B.Tech programme is INR 31,29,535. Hostel charges are separate and depend on the room category. Students may also receive Institute Freeship Card benefits available through the centrally funded NIT scheme.
B.Tech seats at NIT Goa are allotted only through JEE Main ranks and centralised JoSAA counselling. Students do not submit a separate application to NIT Goa. After qualifying for JEE Main, they must register with JoSAA and add NIT Goa to their choice list. Separate seat pools and cutoff ranks apply to Home State seats for Goa and Other State seats.
Applicants must pass 10+2 or an equivalent examination with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. A minimum aggregate of 75% is required, while SC/ST applicants need 65%. Admission also requires a valid JEE Main percentile and rank from the current admission year.
Computer Science and Engineering is the most competitive B.Tech branch at NIT Goa. In the 2025 final round, its JEE Main closing rank for the General category under the Outside State quota was 11,696. For General Outside State applicants, the ECE closing rank was 24,000, while Civil Engineering closed at 57,000. Home State seats for Goa are limited and follow separate cutoffs.
For M.Tech admission, students need a B.Tech or equivalent qualification with at least 60% and a valid GATE score. Seat allocation is completed through CCMT, the Centralised Counselling for M.Tech. Available fields are Computer Science and Engineering, VLSI Design, and Power Systems and Power Electronics.
Ph.D. applicants must have a B.Tech or M.Tech degree with a minimum aggregate of 60%. They also need a valid score in GATE, NET, or the NIT Goa entrance test. The respective department conducts a written examination and interview for the January and July admission cycles.
The 2024 placement season produced a highest package of INR 20 LPA and an overall average of INR 9.24 LPA. Average packages for CSE and ECE remained between INR 11 and 13 LPA. More than 160 companies participated, and students received over 220 offers.
| Metric | 2024 Placement Season |

Samsung, HDFC Bank, Adani, Nokia, and TCS were among the main recruiters in 2024, along with mid-sized technology and infrastructure companies. The institute's place in the NIT system and its wider alumni network support placement opportunities. Since the campus is in a remote part of Goa, most recruiters use virtual placement drives, although selected companies visit the campus to hire CSE and ECE students.
NIT Goa is assessed in the Engineering category of the National Institutional Ranking Framework. It was listed in the 101 to 150 band for both 2025 and 2024. The position reflects its status as a newer NIT, founded in 2010, while its faculty and infrastructure continue to develop.
| Ranking Body | Category | 2025 Rank | 2024 Rank |
|---|---|---|---|
| NIRF | Engineering | 101 to 150 band | 101 to 150 band |
Central and Goa state scholarship schemes help eligible SC, ST, OBC, PwD, and economically weaker students reduce their education costs at NIT Goa.

The NIT Goa campus covers 114 acres at Cuncolim in South Goa's Salcete Taluka. It can be reached from Panaji and Margao and has a connection to National Highway 17. Academic facilities include teaching blocks, separate departmental laboratories, a library, and sports grounds.
On-campus hostels have 275 seats for male students and 825 seats for female students. Wi-Fi is available across the campus. Each of the five B.Tech departments has laboratories designed for its course requirements. Through the NIT network, the library provides digital access to research databases, journals, and e-books.
Its location in Goa gives the institute a coastal setting and a lower cost of living than metropolitan cities. Home State quota seats rarely go to students from outside Goa. Most seats are filled by applicants from different parts of India through the JoSAA Other State allocation.
General category students with JEE Main ranks from 15,000 to 60,000 may compare NIT Goa with NIT Raipur and NIT Jamshedpur. These institutes include newer-generation NIT options with comparable NIRF Engineering bands, though their branch choices, locations, fees, and CSE cutoffs differ.
| Parameter | NIT Goa | NIT Raipur | NIT Jamshedpur |
|---|---|---|---|
| Established | 2010 | 1956 as Government Engineering College | 1960 as Government Engineering College |
| NIRF Engineering 2025 | 101 to 150 band | 101 to 150 band | 51 to 100 band |
| B.Tech Branches (Count) | 5 | 8 | 7 |

NIT Jamshedpur has a longer history and a higher NIRF band, so competition for CSE is stronger. NIT Raipur has more B.Tech branches and a similar level of JEE Main competition. NIT Goa differs through its Goa setting and smaller, closely connected student community. All three are centrally funded institutes with broadly similar fee structures.
Ques. At what rank did NIT Goa CSE close in JEE Main 2025?

Ques. Which M.Tech courses does NIT Goa offer, and how are students selected?
Ans. The three M.Tech specialisations are Computer Science and Engineering, VLSI Design, and Power Systems and Power Electronics. Applicants need a valid GATE score and must participate in CCMT, which is the Centralised Counselling for M.Tech. A B.Tech or equivalent degree with at least 60% is required. The total fee for the two-year programme is INR 3,34,000.
Ques. What should students consider before choosing B.Tech CSE at NIT Goa?
Ans. NIT Goa offers a government-funded B.Tech CSE degree from an Institute of National Importance within the NIT system. It was listed in the 101 to 150 band in the NIRF Engineering rankings for 2025. General Outside State applicants with JEE Main ranks from 12,000 to 16,000 may consider this course. Other factors include the Goa campus location, lower living costs, and the value of an NIT degree for placements and higher studies abroad.
Ques. Which financial aid schemes can NIT Goa students apply for?
Ans. Available schemes include the Institute Freeship Card, which provides a full fee waiver for SC/ST/PwD students, and the merit-cum-means scholarship of INR 30,000 per year for students whose family income is below INR 4.5 Lakhs. Other options are the Post Matric Scholarship for SC/ST students from Goa, the Goa Shipyard Ltd. Scholarship for SC/ST/OBC students, and Gagan Bharari Shiksha Yojana for OBC students. Students become eligible for campus placement after reaching the last year w is the 7th semester, various companies visit for placement, including Samsung, Adobe, Nvidia, etc. The average package lies around 12LPA and the highest at 25LPA, and last year around 200 offers were given across all branches. For the circuital branch, the placement percentage is around 90+ and lower for noncircuital branches. Many students opt for higher studies after completing the course
Read Full ReviewI chose Electronics and communication engineering as this is an evergreen branch having both the core and IT side, and it's easier to transition in both of them. All the faculties have PhDs in the respective specialisation where most of them have gained it from IITs and a few from abroad. There are 2 minors, 1 midsem, and 1 endsem for every semester, there may also be a minute project depending on the subject. The difficulty level solely depends on the professors and varies every year. There is financial aid provided by the government to those belonging to SC/ ST reservations, an annual income mess of 1 Lacs, having 100% exemption on tuition fee, while those belonging to 1-5 Lacs annual income have to pay only 1/3 rd of tuition fee.
