St. Xavier’s College runs courses in Arts, Science, Commerce, Business Management, and Education. Its UG courses follow the four-year honours structure with a three-year exit option under the NEP 2020 framework. The fee details below are taken from the 2026 fee schedule.

B.Com Morning is open only to men. Evening B.Com and BMS are co-educational programmes. B.A. courses such as English, Political Science, Sociology, and Bengali usually see strong competition because the cut-off levels have stayed very high in past years.

St. Xavier’s College Admission Process

St. Xavier’s College mainly admits UG students through merit. For most UG courses, the college does not hold an entrance exam. Students apply online on the college admission portal, and Class XII board marks are used as the main basis for selection.

UG Admission (B.A., B.Sc., B.Com, BMS)

After Class XII results are announced, students submit the online form. The college then releases merit lists for different subjects on its portal. Students who are selected must complete document verification in person and pay the fee within the given time.

• Eligibility: Class XII pass from a recognised board, with the required subjects for the selected programme
• Selection basis: Class XII aggregate percentage and subject-wise percentage
• Admission categories: General merit, Christian minority, economically disadvantaged, sports persons, alumni descendants (Category IV)
• Cut-off range: For popular courses in the general category, Class XII aggregate cut-offs usually remain in the 95% to 98% range, matching the college’s NIRF top-ten position

Integrated M.Sc. Admission (Multimedia, Biotechnology)

The 5-year Integrated B.Sc. + M.Sc. courses in Multimedia and Biotechnology follow separate selection rules. Students must have completed 10+2 with the relevant science subjects. Merit lists and counselling are handled through the same online portal process used for UG admission.

PG and Ph.D. Admission

For PG courses such as M.A. and M.Sc., St. Xavier’s College uses a separate PG portal. Ph.D. admission follows UGC rules. Applicants qualify through NET/GATE or the college’s own research entrance test. The college offers Ph.D. programmes in Physics, Biotechnology, Microbiology, Bengali, English, Commerce, Computer Science, and Political Science.

St. Xavier’s College Placements

St. Xavier’s College placements support students who want to take up jobs after graduation. Many students also move to postgraduate study in India or abroad. In the 2024-25 season, 550+ students were placed, with salary packages between INR 4 LPA and INR 36 LPA.

Over 70 companies joined the 2024-25 placement drive. Finance, banking, and consulting companies form a major part of the recruiter list because of the college’s strong B.Com and BMS student base. Science students are hired by technology, media, and research organisations.

A large number of St. Xavier’s graduates also choose M.Sc., MBA, CA, or research after UG study. Its alumni include Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore, physicist Jagadish Chandra Bose, and three former Chief Ministers of West Bengal.

St. Xavier’s College Rankings

St. Xavier’s College has stayed within the top ten in the NIRF College category for several years. It is one of the few autonomous affiliated colleges in India with both a top-ten NIRF position and NAAC A++ accreditation.

The college received NAAC A++ with a score of 3.53 out of 4 in the 4th accreditation cycle completed in 2024. It also has DBT Star College status, which points to its research strength in biological and allied sciences. Since it is an affiliated autonomous college and not a standalone university, it does not take part in the NIRF University ranking list.

St. Xavier’s College Campus and Infrastructure

The main St. Xavier’s College campus is located at 30 Mother Teresa Sarani in the Park Street area of central Kolkata. This campus has UG and PG classrooms, laboratories, the Goethals Indian Library and Research Society, the Fr. Depelchin Auditorium, and the historic Father Eugene Lafont Observatory (FELO). The Rajarhat expansion campus, spread over 17 acres, provides added space for research and infrastructure.

For science teaching and research, the college has separate labs for Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science, Microbiology, Biotechnology, and Data Science. It also has a Central Computing Facility and a Central Instrumentation Facility funded under the DBT Builder programme. The campus facilities for other streams include a Wellness Centre, Finance Lab, and ICT-enabled classrooms.

Hostel accommodation is offered through Fr. Leeming Boys’ Hostel and Mother Teresa Hostel for girls. Both hostels have been running since 2014. The annual hostel fee is between INR 34,650 and INR 35,650 per student.
