Who Can Apply for IIT JAM 2027?

You can take JAM 2027 if you have completed an undergraduate degree or will appear in the final examination of that degree in 2027. Final-year students and graduates can apply; a Class 12 qualification alone is not enough. Foreign nationals may also take the examination.

Two checks matter when choosing a paper: whether you can appear for JAM, and whether your degree meets the requirements of the programme you want. The second check is called the Minimum Educational Qualification, or MEQ. It can specify your degree, subjects and the number of semesters for which you studied them.

The IIT JAM 2027 application form allows one or two papers. A second paper is useful only when its accepted programmes fit your academic background; qualifying in two subjects does not remove an IIT's degree requirements.

Minimum Marks, Age Limit and Attempts

JAM 2027 does not require 55% or 50% in graduation to appear for the examination. The current exam eligibility has no minimum percentage. A qualifying JAM score, however, is not a substitute for completing your degree and meeting the admitting programme's MEQ.

There is no upper age limit or limit on attempts. A gap after graduation does not make you ineligible, and you do not need to be a recent graduate. Your earlier JAM result does not replace the score required for the admission cycle you are applying to.

Subject-wise Admission Requirements

JAM 2027 has seven test papers: Biotechnology, Chemistry, Economics, Geology, Mathematics, Mathematical Statistics and Physics. The programmes below show how requirements differ even within one paper. They are selected 2027 programme requirements, not a single eligibility rule for every IIT.

Where a programme lists no branch or subject restriction, the general undergraduate-degree requirement still applies. It does not mean a student can join directly after Class 12. Similarly, an engineering exception applies to the named programme; it should not be extended to every MSc course.

Compare the requirements with your semester marksheets. For example, IIT Bombay MSc Chemistry requires Mathematics for one year or two semesters. Studying Mathematics only in Class 12 does not fulfil that undergraduate Mathematics condition.

Can Engineering, Arts and Commerce Graduates Apply?

BE and BTech graduates

Yes. An engineering degree does not stop you from taking JAM. Several programmes also allow engineering graduates without imposing the BSc subject-duration requirements. Examples include MSc Physics at IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi, MSc Mathematics at IIT Delhi, and MSc Chemistry at IIT Roorkee.

Do not read this as blanket admission eligibility. IIT Bombay MSc Chemistry, for example, lists Chemistry for six semesters and Mathematics for two semesters without the same engineering exception. Match the exact programme code, not just the course name.

BA and BCom graduates

BA and BCom graduates can appear for JAM. IIT Delhi MSc Economics expressly accepts these degrees, along with the other listed qualifications, provided the course includes at least three years of education after 10+2. IIT Roorkee's route is more specific: a general BA or BCom needs Mathematics as a subject, while BA Economics is separately listed.

BSc general and interdisciplinary degrees

A degree need not have the same title as the JAM paper in every case. What matters is the chosen programme's rule. A general BSc with the required Physics and Mathematics semesters may fit a Physics MEQ, whereas a specialised degree with too few semesters in a required subject may not. Keep the subject names and semester duration visible in your academic records.

Final-year Students, Backlogs and Degree Proof

Final-year students appearing in the qualifying examination in 2027 may apply. A backlog also does not automatically prevent a JAM application. You must complete the undergraduate programme before the admitting institute's admission date.

The admitting institute sets the deadline for proof of completion and the required subjects. An exam result declared before admission and a degree certificate printed later are different situations: use the documents the institute accepts rather than assuming the printed certificate must already be available on the JAM exam date.

If your university result is delayed, you still need to meet the institute's completion and proof deadlines. Passing JAM does not extend them. Keep semester marksheets, the final result or provisional qualification proof, and any document showing the required subjects ready for verification.

Certificates and Admission Checks

An OBC-NCL or EWS claim needs the prescribed current certificate, not just a category entry in your college records. If an updated certificate is pending, the official FAQ allows an existing certificate initially, followed by rectification within the deadline communicated to you.

A disability-related exam facility and reserved-seat eligibility are separate. Some candidates with less than 40% disability and difficulty in writing can receive approved exam accommodations, but the reservation and concessionary-fee benefits require benchmark disability of at least 40%.

Foreign nationals

Foreign nationals can take JAM. For admission through the stated 2027 process, the brochure allows foreign nationals with Indian degrees, subject to the admitting institute's policy. A foreign degree should not be assumed to qualify solely because the candidate was allowed to sit the examination.

An admitting institute may also require a physical-fitness certificate from a registered medical practitioner or its own medical examination. This is an admission check, not a reason to claim that every applicant must submit the same medical certificate with the exam form.
