IIT JAM Cutoff 2027: Qualifying Marks or Admission Rank?

JAM has two different cutoff questions: Did you qualify in the test? and Was your rank within the range allotted to a particular programme? The first uses marks; the second uses ranks.

The JAM 2027 examination is on 14 February, and results are scheduled for 18 March. The 2027 qualifying marks and admission closing ranks are not available yet. The tables below contain actual 2026 data, with the admission round and category identified.

The IIT JAM 2027 schedule separates the examination and result from admission. A qualifying cutoff is not an opening rank, and a closing rank is not the number of marks needed to pass.

IIT JAM 2026 Qualifying Marks

These are the minimum qualifying scores out of 100. In 2026, a GEN candidate with 40 marks qualified in Mathematics but fell below the Biotechnology cutoff of 42.30. An OBC-NCL Biotechnology candidate with the same score crossed the applicable threshold of 38.07.

Qualifying does not reserve a seat. The admission application, programme requirements, AIR, category and seat availability still determine allotment. A single "passing mark" for all seven JAM papers would hide these differences.

Do not compare 42.30 marks in Biotechnology with an admission rank of 42. They use different units. The first is a score threshold; the second is a position in a paper-wise merit order.

IIT Bombay 2026 Opening and Closing Ranks

The selected IIT Bombay MSc programmes below show 2026 Round 6 ranks. GEN opening and closing ranks are listed first; the next table gives category-wise closing ranks. PwD columns are separate in the official list and are not merged into these figures.

Category-wise closing ranks: Round 6

Applied Geophysics and Physics both use the PH paper, but they are different programmes. Their GEN closing ranks were 451 and 64 respectively. Describing either as "the IIT Bombay Physics-paper cutoff" without the course name would be incomplete.

Similarly, MS refers to Mathematical Statistics and MA to Mathematics. MSc Statistics and MSc Mathematics must not be compared as if they used one common JAM rank.

IIT Delhi, Kanpur and Madras 2026 Cutoffs

These are selected MSc closing ranks from 2026 Round 6. Each row retains the programme code and accepted paper. The values are ranks, not marks, and the tables exclude the separately listed PwD columns.

IIT Delhi

The Biological Sciences programme at IIT Delhi has separate BT and CY entries. The GEN closing ranks were 32 through BT and 627 through CY. A candidate cannot compare a Biotechnology AIR with the Chemistry entry merely because the programme name is the same.

IIT Kanpur

Economics has separate EN and MS entries in the 2026 list. Keep the route attached to the rank: GEN closed at 45 for EN and 116 for MS. These historical routes should not be assumed unchanged for a later admission cycle.

IIT Madras

These comparisons cover the selected institutes and programmes shown, not every JAM seat. A programme with the same name can have different subject requirements and category-wise intake at another IIT.

How Did Cutoffs Change Between Rounds?

For these IIT Bombay MSc programmes, the GEN closing rank changed between the first and sixth admission rounds as follows:

Mathematics moved from 34 to 55; Physics moved from 39 to 64. Applied Geology changed only from 16 to 17. There was no common increase that could be applied to every course.

A larger closing-rank number means the list reached further down the merit order. It does not mean the examination became easier or that candidates received extra marks. Seat acceptance, withdrawals, upgrades and preferences affect the admission lists.

Do not assume that waiting guarantees a more favourable cutoff. Each round depends on available seats and the applicants still participating. Compare the same programme, paper and category when following movement.

How to Compare Your Rank With a Cutoff

1. Choose the admission year and round.
2. Match the institute and exact programme code.
3. Confirm the JAM paper accepted for that row.
4. Use the applicable category and, where relevant, PwD column.
5. Compare the same rank measure; do not substitute raw marks.
6. Check degree subjects and other programme requirements before adding the option.

For example, IIT Bombay MSc Physics had a GEN closing rank of 64 in Round 6 of 2026. PH AIR 60 was numerically better than that closing point; PH AIR 100 was outside it. That does not establish whether either candidate actually received a seat, because eligibility, application and preferences also matter.

The same PH AIR 100 falls within the 74-451 opening-to-closing interval recorded for Applied Geophysics in that round. It is a different programme with its own academic requirements, not an automatic alternative seat.

A raw score cannot be compared directly with these rank tables. JAM awards a separate AIR for each paper. There is no single marks-to-rank conversion that works across Mathematics, Biotechnology, Physics and the other subjects.

Eligibility, Seat Categories and Programme Choices

Before using a historical closing rank to select 2027 options, match your degree to the IIT JAM programme eligibility requirements. Admission requirements can specify particular undergraduate subjects and a minimum study duration. A qualifying rank does not waive them.

The 2027 matrix separates GEN, EWS, OBC-NCL, SC and ST seats. PwD reservation is horizontal, with disability seats included within categories. A non-PwD closing rank should not be presented as the PwD cutoff or vice versa.

Current seat allocation can differ from the previous year. The 2027 brochure covers around 3,000 seats at 23 admitting IITs, while the historical ranks above describe the 2026 allotments. Use the current programme and paper options when completing the separate admission application.

Keep the options in your genuine order of preference. A previous closing rank helps compare a course with your result, but it does not replace the admission choices, required certificates or round deadline. Result-sharing institutions have separate admission routes and should be compared using their own programme and category data.
