IIT JAM 2027 Paper Analysis: Exam Date and Structure

IIT Kharagpur will hold JAM 2027 on 14 February 2027. The paper has not been held yet. The subject reviews and performance figures here refer to JAM 2026, the latest completed examination.

Each test paper has 60 questions for 100 marks, with three hours to answer them. The mix is 30 single-answer MCQs, 10 multiple-select questions and 20 numerical-answer questions. All seven subjects use this structure, but they do not share one question paper, score distribution or rank list.

IIT JAM 2026 Difficulty: Subject-wise Review

Student reactions reported after the 2026 exam pointed to a lengthy Mathematics paper and a more manageable Chemistry paper.

Physics reviews differed: student interviews included moderate-to-difficult assessments, while a coaching review described it as moderate. The Physics maximum was 68.67, while 49.3% of candidates qualified. Difficulty reviews and result figures offer different views of the same paper.

What the 2026 Results Show for Each Subject

Biotechnology (BT)

Biotechnology had 11,084 candidates appear and 2,593 qualify. Its highest raw score was 85.67 and the GEN qualifying cutoff was 42.30. The official 50-100 score bands contained 1,040 candidates, a much larger share than in Mathematics. A raw-score target borrowed from MA would therefore give a poor comparison for BT.

Chemistry (CY)

Chemistry had 11,021 appearances, but only 105 candidates fell in the combined 50-100 bands. The maximum was 79.67. Scores above 50 were uncommon despite the moderate difficulty reported by students. The 18.65 GEN qualifying threshold and a score competing near the top of the list were very different benchmarks.

Economics (EN)

Economics recorded the highest subject maximum, 87.33. Of 2,807 candidates who appeared, 629 qualified. Its qualification rate was 22.4%, while 253 candidates fell in the combined 50-100 bands. Neither a high maximum nor a lower qualifying proportion, by itself, establishes an easy or difficult paper.

Geology (GG)

Geology had the smallest appearing group among the seven papers: 1,813 candidates. There were 627 qualifiers, a 34.6% qualification rate. Its maximum score was 73, and 54 candidates were in the combined 50-100 bands. Compare a GG practice score with Geology results rather than the much larger Chemistry or Biotechnology candidate groups.

Mathematics (MA)

Mathematics had 9,617 appearances and 3,463 qualifiers. The maximum was 82.67, but only 28 candidates were in the combined 50-100 bands. The GEN qualifying cutoff was 12.65, leaving a large gap between qualifying marks and the highest score.

Mathematical Statistics (MS)

MS is separate from Mathematics. It had 2,705 appearances, 754 qualifiers and a highest score of 76.33. Only 22 candidates fell in the combined 50-100 bands. Use the MS paper and MS score distribution when reviewing a mock; similar chapter names do not make an MA rank comparison valid.

Physics (PH)

Physics had 9,123 appearances and 4,499 qualifiers. Its maximum was 68.67, the lowest subject maximum that year, while its 49.3% qualification rate was the highest. Its GEN qualifying cutoff was 12.04.

IIT JAM 2026 Qualifying Rates and Highest Marks

The percentage is qualified candidates divided by candidates who appeared in that paper. It is not the percentage of candidates who secured an IIT seat. A qualified candidate still has to meet programme eligibility and take part in admission.

The report totals 48,170 paper appearances. Some candidates take two papers, so adding subject totals should not be described as a count of unique students. Likewise, adding the qualifying totals across papers does not establish the number of distinct admitted students.

How Common Were Scores in the 50-100 Bands?

These counts add the published 50-60, 60-70, 70-80, 80-90 and 90-100 bands. The percentages are calculated from those counts and the appearing totals. They describe JAM 2026, not a 2027 score prediction.

A range is not an exact mark. The data cannot say how many people scored precisely 50, resolve ties, or assign an exact AIR to a mark inside a band. For example, the 28 Mathematics candidates in those five bands do not establish one particular rank for every score near 50.

Good Attempts: Why the Question Count Is Not Enough

Two students who attempt 40 questions can finish with different marks. Their totals depend on which one- and two-mark questions they answered, how many MCQs were wrong and whether every selected MSQ option was correct.

Worked example: seven correct one-mark MCQs and twelve correct two-mark MCQs earn 31 marks. Three wrong one-mark MCQs and three wrong two-mark MCQs deduct 3, leaving 28. Six fully correct MSQs add 12. Five correct one-mark NATs and four correct two-mark NATs add 13. The total is 53/100, not simply the number of attempted questions.

In that example, there are 40 attempts: 34 correct and six incorrect. A different set of 40 responses can give a different score. Compare responses with the matching paper and key using the JAM answer-key and response-sheet guide.

Use a Previous Paper to Find What Cost You Marks

After a timed paper, separate a question you could not start from one you solved incorrectly. They need different follow-up. For an MSQ, record the extra or missed option; for a NAT, keep the unit conversion and intermediate value; for an MCQ, record the negative marks as well as the lost correct-answer marks.
