IIT JAM 2027 Exam Pattern

Each JAM paper contains 60 questions for 100 marks and lasts 180 minutes. Sections A, B and C are compulsory parts of the paper, but an unanswered question earns zero rather than a penalty. You do not have to enter an answer to every question to complete the test.

The same section structure applies to Biotechnology, Chemistry, Economics, Geology, Mathematics, Mathematical Statistics and Physics. Their subject content differs; 30 MCQs does not mean 30 questions from one chapter.

Section A carries half the marks. Sections B and C together carry the other half, without negative marking. A mock review should keep the three formats separate so that correct numerical work does not hide repeated MCQ penalties.

MCQ, MSQ and NAT Marking

MCQ: choose one option

Each MCQ has four options and one correct answer. A wrong one-mark MCQ loses 1/3 mark; a wrong two-mark MCQ loses 2/3 mark. Use these fractions in calculations instead of repeatedly rounding them to 0.33 or 0.67.

MSQ: select the complete correct set

An MSQ can have one or more correct options, but not all four. There is no negative marking and no partial credit. If A and C are correct, selecting only A earns zero, and selecting A, C and D also earns zero. Selecting exactly A and C earns both marks.

NAT: enter a number

Numerical Answer Type questions show no answer options. Enter the calculated real number with the on-screen numeric keypad. A correct response earns the question's one or two marks; an incorrect or unanswered response earns zero.

No partial marking in MSQs: Selecting one known correct option is not enough when another option is also correct. The complete selection must match the correct set.

Calculate Your JAM Raw Marks

Add marks from correct answers, then subtract penalties for incorrect MCQs. Wrong MSQs and NATs contribute zero; they are not included in the penalty total.

Raw marks = correct 1-mark MCQs + 2 x correct 2-mark MCQs - wrong 1-mark MCQs / 3 - 2 x wrong 2-mark MCQs / 3 + 2 x correct MSQs + correct 1-mark NATs + 2 x correct 2-mark NATs.

For this original example, all questions not counted as correct or wrong are unanswered:

The score is 6 + 22 + 16 + 6 + 10 = 60 out of 100. In the first row, seven correct answers earn seven marks and three wrong answers deduct one. In the second row, twelve correct answers earn 24 and three wrong answers deduct two.

This is a raw-score calculation, not a rank conversion. A rank depends on performance in the same test paper. A score of 60 in Mathematics and 60 in Physics need not produce the same rank.

Test Papers and Two-Paper Choices

The examination is on 14 February 2027. You may take one test paper, or two papers from different sessions. Mathematics + Mathematical Statistics is possible; Mathematics + Chemistry is not. Physics + Biotechnology is also not possible because both run in the afternoon.

The test-paper combination and the admission requirement are separate. A programme may require a particular JAM paper and particular subjects in your undergraduate degree. Choosing a paper because its session is convenient does not establish eligibility for every programme linked with that subject.

NAT Answers and Computer-based Test Rules

Use the mouse to select MCQ and MSQ answers. For NAT responses, use the virtual numeric keypad; the physical computer keyboard is disabled. The on-screen virtual calculator is available, while personal calculators are prohibited.

Read the numerical instruction in the question before entering a response. Keep the sign, units and any requested precision in your working. For example, if a question requests metres, convert a result in centimetres before entering the number. The instruction in the question takes priority over a rounding habit learned from another exam.

A scribble pad is supplied for rough work. Write your name and registration number before using it, and return it after the examination. The test ends automatically when the allowed time finishes.

Time Limit and Compensatory Time

The standard duration is three hours per test paper. The published pattern does not assign separate timers to Sections A, B and C. A personal allocation during practice is a study choice, not an official sectional limit.

Eligible candidates can receive 60 minutes of compensatory time per paper. This includes eligible persons with less than 40% disability who have difficulty in writing. The prescribed certificates and application requirements apply; candidates eligible for a scribe can receive the extra time even without using a scribe. Where a candidate is not eligible for a scribe, the required government medical certificate must establish the physical limitation to write.

The extra hour changes the applicable end time to 1:30 PM in the morning session or 6:30 PM in the afternoon session. Candidates must complete the relevant application and certificate requirements for the facility.

Practice with the Exam Pattern

Use the IIT JAM 2025 question papers for subject-wise practice. Keep a separate count of MCQ penalties, incomplete MSQ selections and NAT entry errors. Each error needs a different correction: concept revision, option-by-option testing, or more careful numerical input.

When reviewing an MSQ, explain why every selected option is true and every rejected option is false. For a NAT, retain the calculation before comparing the entered value. A correct method can still lose the mark if the final number has the wrong sign or unit.
