How IIT JAM Reservation Works

The 2027 admission matrix divides seats into GEN, EWS, OBC-NCL, SC and ST categories. PwD reservation is horizontal: the disability seats sit within these categories, not on top of the total intake. The brochure provides 5% reservation for PwD across categories.

Your category claim must be supported by the required certificate. It does not replace the academic requirements of a programme or guarantee allotment. Admission depends on the applicable rank, programme preferences, category and available seats.

The application fee is a separate benefit. Female candidates receive the reduced examination fee, but that fee rule is not evidence of a separate female seat quota in the JAM programme matrix.

IIT JAM 2027 Category-wise Seats

These selected IIT Bombay MSc programmes show the category allocation published for JAM 2027. In an entry such as 13 + 1, the second number is the PwD seat within that category. An entry without a plus sign has no separately marked PwD seat in that cell.

For Biotechnology, GEN has 13 non-PwD seats and 1 PwD seat; SC has 4 non-PwD seats and 1 PwD seat. Together with EWS 4, OBC-NCL 9 and ST 3, the programme has 35 seats, including 2 PwD seats. Adding the two PwD seats again would incorrectly give 37.

Use the programme code as well as the institute name when comparing choices. Seats belong to a specific programme and paper route. Where a programme takes students through more than one JAM paper, a row for one paper should not be mistaken for its entire intake. These examples are not the complete seat matrix for all IITs.

SC, ST and OBC-NCL Certificates

SC and ST candidates need a valid category certificate issued by a competent authority. Keep the original for admission verification as well as the scanned copy used in the application. A self-declaration does not replace the prescribed certificate.

OBC-NCL: central recognition and non-creamy-layer status

The OBC-NCL certificate must identify a community recognised by the Government of India and certify that the candidate does not belong to the creamy layer. A state-list entry alone does not establish eligibility for the central OBC-NCL claim.

The certificate must be issued on or after 1 April 2026. Use the JAM-prescribed format. It asks the issuing authority to record the relevant Government of India resolution identifying the community.

Authorised issuers include the specified district or sub-divisional magistrates, a revenue officer not below the rank of Tehsildar, and the other competent authorities listed with the certificate format. An ordinary college letter is not an OBC-NCL certificate.

If the updated OBC-NCL or EWS certificate is pending, the JAM FAQ allows an existing certificate initially. You must then correct the document within the deadline communicated to you; the initial upload does not waive the updated-certificate requirement.

EWS Certificate: Income and Assets

The EWS claim needs the prescribed Income and Assets Certificate issued on or after 1 April 2026. The certificate covers candidates whose caste is not recognised as SC, ST or OBC in the central list.

The family's gross annual income must be below INR 8 lakh for the financial year recorded in the certificate. Income includes salary, agriculture, business, profession and other sources. Income alone is not enough: ownership or possession of any asset at or above these limits excludes the claim.

For this purpose, family includes the applicant, parents, siblings below 18, spouse and children below 18. Property held by the family in different locations is combined when applying the land or property test. Splitting property between cities does not avoid the limit.

The certificate needs the issuing authority's signature and seal, the applicable validity year and the required attested photograph. A salary slip or an income certificate without the prescribed asset declaration is not the same document.

PwD Reservation and Exam Facilities

Reservation and concessionary-fee benefits require benchmark disability of at least 40%. Submit the applicable disability certificate and UDID number. The disability certificate must come from the authorised medical authority, such as the Chief Medical Officer, Civil Surgeon or Medical Superintendent of a government medical institution.

The rules for a scribe and compensatory time cover additional situations. Eligible candidates with less than 40% disability who have difficulty in writing may receive these exam facilities with the prescribed certificates. Receiving an exam facility does not, by itself, establish eligibility for a PwD reserved seat.

Eligible candidates receive 60 minutes of compensatory time per three-hour paper. Candidates eligible for a scribe can opt for the extra time without using a scribe. Candidates not eligible for the scribe facility need the required medical certification of their physical limitation to write.

Application Fees and Admission Payments

OBC-NCL and EWS status alone do not reduce the examination fee. For example, a male OBC-NCL candidate without a PwD claim pays INR 2,000 for one paper. A female OBC-NCL candidate pays INR 1,000 because the female-candidate fee concession applies.

Select the correct category and upload the corresponding certificate in the IIT JAM application form. A permitted category change carries INR 300 plus any applicable fee difference. Correcting a document defect raised during scrutiny is free.

After the JAM result

The seat-booking fee is adjusted against the admitting institute's fee. It is not the complete cost of the MSc programme. Do not treat an exam-fee concession as a promise that tuition, hostel or every other institute charge will be waived.

Category Verification During Admission

1. Declare the category accurately and upload the prescribed certificate with the application.
2. Check JOAPS and registered email or SMS for scrutiny defects; replace the specified document within the communicated deadline.
3. After qualifying, complete the separate admission application and choose programmes for which you meet the MEQ.
4. If allotted a seat, respond within the round deadline and pay the applicable seat-booking fee.
5. Provide original category and academic documents when the admitting institute requires them.

There is no common 55% graduation threshold for GEN/OBC/EWS candidates or 50% threshold for SC/ST/PwD candidates to take JAM 2027. The exam has no minimum graduation percentage. Degree completion and programme-specific subjects remain separate admission requirements.

A qualifying-score cutoff is also different from a closing admission rank. Crossing the first means you qualified in the test; the second reflects the seats allotted for a particular programme, category and round. A category certificate alone cannot turn either into guaranteed admission.
