IIT JAM Marks Vs Rank can be used by candidates to estimate their ranks based on their exam scores. After the declaration of the IIT JAM 2026 Results, the authorities will release the Merit list for the candidates. IIT JAM 2026 Merit List will display candidates' ranks in the exam.

Candidates will secure seats through IIT JAM Counselling 2026 based on their rank and scores. The conducting body, IIT Madras will publish a total of four admission lists along with IIT JAM 2026 opening and closing ranks.

IIT JAM 2026 Factors Determining

IIT JAM 2026 rank position will be determined by various factors mentioned below:

Section A marks obtained
  • 30 questions having 10 questions of 1 mark each and 20 questions of two marks each. Each question will have four choices out of which only one choice will be a correct one.
  • Objective type (MCQs)
  • Online (CBT)
  • The question papers at all exam centres will be in English only.
  • 1 or 2 mark questions
  • For each wrong answer to 1 mark question, 1/3 mark will be deducted and similarly, for each wrong answer to 2 mark questions, 2/3 mark will be deducted.
Section B marks obtained
  • 10 questions only
  • Multiple Select Questions (MCQs). Each MSQ-type question is similar to MCQ but with the difference that there may be one or more than one choice(s) that are correct out of the four given choices.
  • Online (CBT)
  • The question papers at all exam centres will be in English only.
  • The candidate gets full credit only if he/she selects all the correct answers and no wrong answers.
  • There are no negative and no partial marking provisions.
Section C marks obtained
  • 20 questions involving 10 questions of one mark each and 10 questions of two marks each.
  • Numerical Answer Type (NAT). For NAT-type questions, the answer is a signed real number, which needs to be entered using the virtual numeric keypad on the monitor.
  • Online (CBT)
  • The question papers at all exam centers will be in English only.
  • For correct answers candidates will get 2 marks.
  • There are no negative and no partial marking provisions.
Overall score Overall score will be calculated by combining marks from all 3 sections.
Candidate category Reservations for SC/ST, OBC, etc. will also dictate rank positions.
