IIT JAM Marks vs Rank 2027

JAM assigns a separate All India Rank for each test paper. Your marks show what you scored out of 100; AIR shows your position in that paper. A Mathematics score and a Biotechnology score cannot be converted through one common rank table.

IIT Kharagpur will conduct JAM 2027 on 14 February, with results scheduled for 18 March 2027. The 2027 marks-to-rank relationship will depend on that examination's results. The comparisons below use actual 2026 scores, not predicted 2027 ranks.

If you take two papers, keep the two results separate. The marks are not added, averaged or converted into one combined AIR. For admission, each programme specifies the JAM paper it accepts.

2026 Paper-wise Scores: What the Data Shows

The difference is substantial. The highest Physics score was 68.67, while the highest Economics score was 87.33. Calling 70 marks the minimum for a strong performance in every subject would ignore the actual Physics result.

The qualifying threshold was also different: 42.30 for GEN Biotechnology candidates compared with 12.65 in Mathematics. These are minimum test-qualification marks, not the marks needed for a particular IIT programme.

Maximum marks describe the top of the score distribution. They do not establish the score at AIR 100 or AIR 500. For that, you need the scores and ordering of candidates below the maximum, including tied scores.

How Many Scored in Each Range in 2026?

Each number is the number of candidates in that score band, not a rank. The band labels follow the 2026 statistical report.

No candidate was recorded in the 90-100 band in any paper. The table focuses on the higher score bands; it does not include candidates below 40 marks.

Mathematics and Biotechnology at 40-50 marks

Mathematics had 74 candidates in the 40-50 band and a total of 28 across the four bands above it: 17 + 8 + 2 + 1. Biotechnology had 1,134 in the 40-50 band and 1,040 across the bands above it. The same broad score range therefore occupied a very different part of the two distributions.

This does not give an exact rank for 45 marks. The report groups several different scores together and does not show where 45 sits within the band. It also does not give a tie-break order for every score.

Physics at 60-70 marks

Only five Physics candidates were in the 60-70 band in 2026, with none in the bands above it. A generic claim that 60-70 marks always corresponds to AIR 110-210 would not fit that paper's actual distribution.

Use these counts to judge the relative strength of a historical score. Do not turn the grouped data into a precise 2027 rank, especially at a band boundary where the report's interval convention matters.

What Can 30, 40 or 50 Marks Mean?

30 marks

For a GEN candidate in 2026, 30 marks cleared the qualifying threshold in Chemistry, Geology, Mathematics, Mathematical Statistics and Physics. It did not clear the Biotechnology or Economics threshold. A statement that everyone below 30 marks is outside the admission process would also be wrong: several paper-specific qualifying marks were much lower.

40 marks

In 2026, 40 marks was still below the GEN qualifying mark for Biotechnology (42.30) and Economics (40.63). It was above both papers' OBC-NCL/EWS thresholds. The category comparison matters even before considering an institute's admission closing rank.

50 marks

Fifty marks exceeded the GEN qualifying cutoff in all seven papers in 2026. That establishes qualification against those historical thresholds; it does not establish which IIT or programme would offer a seat.

A useful score target needs a paper, an admission goal and a year. After the 2027 result, use your official AIR and the programme's admission data. Before the examination, use full-length papers to track your raw score and the types of questions costing you marks.

Raw Marks, Percentage and AIR

Calculate marks before trying to interpret rank. JAM has 30 MCQs worth 50 marks, ten MSQs worth 20 marks and twenty NAT questions worth 30 marks. The IIT JAM exam pattern separates the one-mark and two-mark groups.

An MSQ earns its two marks only when the selected options exactly match the correct set. There is no partial credit for selecting one of two correct options. NAT questions use the accepted numerical value or interval.

Suppose your correct answers earn 51 marks. If you also have three wrong one-mark MCQs and six wrong two-mark MCQs, the deduction is 1 + 4 = 5 marks. Your score is 46/100, or 46% marks. It is not the 46th percentile and does not identify an AIR.

Keep the fractions until the final sum instead of repeatedly subtracting rounded values. Use the IIT JAM answer key and response-sheet guide to match questions and numerical ranges correctly. A calculation using a provisional key can change if the accepted answers are revised.

Use Your Rank for Programme Choices

A qualifying cutoff is measured in marks; an admission closing rank is a rank. Clearing the first does not mean you have reached the second. The closing rank belongs to a particular programme, category and admission round.

For an illustrative example, if a programme's applicable closing rank is 400, AIR 350 is numerically better and AIR 450 is outside that recorded closing point. This describes one historical list; it does not guarantee the same outcome next year or in another category.

An IIT can offer several programmes through different JAM papers. A Physics rank does not automatically work for every MSc at that institute. The IIT JAM programme eligibility requirements also distinguish the exam-appearance rule from the subjects needed for admission.

The 2027 IIT admission route covers around 3,000 seats at 23 admitting IITs. Candidates who qualify and meet the programme requirements submit a separate admission application and arrange their preferences. Other result-sharing institutions have their own admission routes; do not treat their closing ranks as another round of the same IIT list.

Keep the programme name, accepted paper and category beside every saved closing rank. An isolated number such as "IIT Bombay cutoff 50" is not enough to compare your options: it could refer to marks, a rank, a different programme or an older year.

Why Marks-to-rank Estimates Differ

• Number appearing: Mathematics had 9,617 candidates in 2026; Mathematical Statistics had 2,705. MA and MS are different papers, not interchangeable labels.
• Score distribution: a crowded score band can contain many candidates within a small mark difference. The same one-mark gain need not produce the same rank change in every paper.
• Final answers: a changed accepted option or numerical interval can alter scores before the final result.
• Tied marks: a grouped score table does not show the order of candidates with the same score.
• Admission demand: seat availability and programme preferences affect admission closing ranks, not the marks you earned in the examination.

A previous-year rank screenshot is useful only when the paper, year and score are clear. One candidate's result does not establish a rank range for everyone with similar marks. For JAM 2027, the paper-wise official result remains the source of your AIR.
