The JoSAA 2026 counselling process will begin on June 2, 2026, and will involve 127 institutions, including IIT, NIT, IIIT, and GFTI branches. The JEE Main CSAB 2026 process then takes charge for up to 3 special rounds, thus allotting any seats left in the NIT+ process.

  • JoSAA 2026 conducts 6 seat allotment rounds starting June 2026 at josaa.nic.in, covering 23 IITs, 31 NITs, 26 IIITs, and 40+ GFTIs

  • CSAB 2026 is conducted after JoSAA's final round, typically in July–August 2026, with 3 special rounds at csab.nic.in.
  • CSAB closing ranks are consistently 1.5 to 3 times higher than JoSAA closing ranks.
  • CSAB does not offer admission to IITs and only offers admission to NITs, IIITs and GFTIs.

Key Summary:
  • JoSAA vs CSAB scope: JoSAA covers IITs, NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs across 6 rounds and CSAB covers only the NIT+ system (NITs, IIITs, GFTIs) across 3 special rounds after JoSAA ends.
  • JoSAA vs CSAB seat Withdrawal rules differ sharply: JoSAA allows seat withdrawal with a refund in most rounds and CSAB seat acceptance is largely non-refundable.
  • Fresh registration needed for CSAB: a JoSAA registration does not carry over.
  • CSAB extends rank reach significantly more than JoSAA final round closing ranks for the same institute and branch.
  • Blacklisting risk applies to both candidates who accept a seat and do not report without formally withdrawing, which can be stopped in future IIT admissions.

What Is JoSAA 2026?

JoSAA is the central authority managing admission to 127 government engineering institutes in a single merged counselling.

  • A single JEE ranking will be enough for the candidate.
  • The whole of the JoSAA counselling 2026 cycle will take place over six rounds of seat allotment spanning June and July 2026
  • Each round involves seat allotment, candidate response (freeze/float/slide), document verification at a reporting centre, and fee payment.
  • The process is fully online via josaa.nic.in.
Step Activity What to Do
1 Registration and Login Use JEE Main 2026 application number and OTP to register
2 Choice Filling Enter preferred institute and branch combinations in priority order
3 Choice Locking Lock choices before the deadline—changes cannot be made after
4 Mock Allotment Check simulated result; modify choices if needed before final lock
5 Seat Allotment (Round 1) Seat offered based on rank and choices
6 Freeze / Float / Slide Pay the seat acceptance fee (₹30,000 / ₹15,000 reserved)
7 Document Verification Visit the reporting centre with original documents and two xerox sets
8 Repeat Rounds 2–6 A seat may be upgraded if Float/Slide is selected and a better seat is freed
9 Partial Admission Fee (PAF) After Round 6, NIT+ candidates pay PAF to confirm the final seat

What Is CSAB 2026?

CSAB (Central Seat Allocation Board) conducts counselling for undergraduate engineering and architecture admissions into NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs after JoSAA closes. It does not cover IITs.

  • The CSAB 2026 counselling process is based on JEE Main 2026 ranks and runs through three distinct round types which are Special, NEUT, and Supernumerary
  • Candidates must register freshly at csab.nic.in even if they participated in JoSAA.
  • Fresh CSAB choice filling is mandatory.
CSAB Round Type Who Can Apply Institutes Covered Key Restriction
CSAB Special Round Candidates with valid JEE Main rank who were not allotted in JoSAA, or want to upgrade their NIT+ seat NITs, IIITs, GFTIs Fresh registration mandatory even if registered for JoSAA
CSAB NEUT Round Candidates from 8 North-East states (Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland, Sikkim, Tripura) and 5 UTs AICTE-approved institutes in NE states and UTs Domicile-based eligibility only
CSAB Supernumerary Round Candidates from UTs of Andaman & Nicobar, Lakshadweep, Daman & Diu, and Dadra & Nagar Haveli NIT Calicut, NIT Durgapur, SVNIT Surat only Restricted to UT candidates only

JoSAA vs CSAB 2026: Closing Rank Difference

The difference in JoSAA 2024 closing ranks and CSAB 2024 closing ranks is enough to affect results completely for students having ranks ranging between 50,000 and 200,000. Below is a table indicating jumps in numbers from 20,000 to above 165,000 at various NITs and GFTIs.

  • For instance, the closure rank of ECE course at NIT Manipur in JoSAA was 400, while that in CSAB reached up to 62,000, indicating a rise by more than 61,000.
  • Similarly, there was an increase by about 165,000 in the Computer Science course rank in Mizoram University.
Institute Branch JoSAA Closing Rank CSAB Closing Rank
NIT Arunachal Pradesh ECE (Open State) 55,000 94,000
NIT Manipur ECE (Open State) 400 62,000
NIT Sikkim Electrical (Open State) 42,000 62,000
NIT Nagaland Electrical (Open State) 50,000 82,000
Assam University Silchar (GFTI) Computer Science 500 100,000
University of Hyderabad (GFTI) Materials Engineering 67,000 143,000
Tezpur University (GFTI) Computer Science 56,000 83,000
Mizoram University (GFTI) Computer Science 68,000 234,000

The data is based on the 2024 JoSAA and CSAB closing ranks from the video analysis by Jay Harsh Pratap. Verify updated 2026 figures at josaa.nic.in and csab.nic.in once released.

Jay Harsh Pratap explains the rank-wise seat opportunities in both JoSAA and CSAB rounds in detail. Check the session below:

JoSAA 2026 Home State vs Open State Quota

Quota Type Who Qualifies Impact on Closing Rank
Home State Quota (HS) Candidates whose state code of eligibility matches the NIT's home state Better (lower) closing rank—more competition from home-state candidates but more seats reserved
Other State Quota (OS) Candidates from states other than the NIT's home state Closing rank is generally higher—fewer reserved seats
GFTIs and IIITs No home state quota A single closing rank applies to all candidates

NIT Andhra Pradesh, for example, closes around 51,000 (open state) in JoSAA but the CSAB closing rank for the same branch from other states has reached 87,000.

Common JoSAA and CSAB 2026 Mistakes

Mistake Impact Fix
Choosing Freeze too early in the JoSAA rounds Permanently blocks the upgrade to a better branch or institute Use Float or Slide unless fully satisfied with the current seat
Not re-registering for CSAB after JoSAA Miss out on CSAB special rounds entirely Fresh registration at csab.nic.in is mandatory—JoSAA registration does not transfer
Filling only the top-choice colleges in the choice list Risk of getting no allotment if those colleges are out of the rank range Fill 25–50 choices in a realistic rank range, including GFTIs and NIT+ options
Missing the withdrawal deadline after JoSAA Risk of blacklisting for future IIT admissions Withdraw formally at josaa.nic.in before deadline (typically July 22 at 5 PM)
Ignoring the home state vs the other state quota Applying to an NIT in the home state using the OS column rank data Always verify HS and OS closing ranks separately for each NIT
Not tracking CSAB closing rank trends Assuming JoSAA's final round closing rank is the end CSAB closing ranks are consistently 1.5–3x higher; track both
Missing PAF payment after JoSAA Round 6 The provisionally allotted seat gets cancelled Pay the Partial Admission Fee within the specified window (~July 23–27)

JoSAA vs CSAB Counselling 2026 FAQs

Ques. Can I participate in CSAB 2026 if I already got a seat in JoSAA?

Ans. Yes. Candidates who were allotted a seat in JoSAA and paid the Partial Admission Fee (PAF) can still register for CSAB special rounds to try for an upgrade. Fresh registration at csab.nic.in is mandatory. If a better seat is allotted in CSAB, the JoSAA seat is forfeited.

Ques. What will happen if the deadline for withdrawing from JoSAA after the last round is missed?

Ans. The candidate will face a blacklisting penalty if the candidate has accepted the allotted seat in JoSAA without making the necessary payments or withdrawing from it within the set deadline. The period when the candidate can make an application for withdrawal is usually until 5 pm on 22nd July.

Ques. Should the CSAB closing rank be preferred over JoSAA closing rank always in case of same branch?

Ans. Yes. Since CSAB happens after JoSAA's six rounds of counselling, only the remaining seats remain open, with a smaller candidate pool to begin with. It has been observed that CSAB closing ranks are about 1.5 to 3 times higher in the case of the same NIT branch and category compared to JoSAA closing ranks. However, there will be a difference in the branches selected, as core branches such as CS and ECE would already get filled in JoSAA counselling sessions.

Ques. Can candidates with ranks above 1 lakh realistically get a government engineering seat?

Ans. Yes, through CSAB. GFTIs, in particular, have closed at ranks well above 1 lakh — and in some cases beyond 2–3 lakh — in CSAB special rounds. Tezpur University, Mizoram University, Puducherry Technological University, and Assam University, Silchar are fully government-funded institutes that have historically accommodated these rank ranges in CSAB rounds.
