What's New?
The JoSAA 2026 seat matrix is expected to be announced in June 2026, before the commencement of the Counselling process. The announcement will help the candidates determine the number of seats available for admission in NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs across India.
In 2024, the total seats available through JoSAA across NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs were 57,157, divided as follows:
- NITs: 24, 229 seats
- IIITs: 8,546 seats
- GFTIs: 9,402 seats
- IITs: 17,740

JEE Main Seats in NITs, IIITs and GFTIs
The official data for the total seats in JEE Main 2026 across NITs, IIITs and GFTIs are yet to be released by NTA. These seats determine the competition level and cut-off for admissions to these top institutions. The seat matrix data for 2026 will be updated here after the release in June, meanwhile, you can check the JEE Main 2024 seat matrix data to anticipate the number of seats in 2026.
How many government seats are there in JEE Main?
The total seats available in JEE Main are 57,157, divided across the NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs. The most number of seats are available at NITs (23,997), followed by GFTIs (9,402) and IIITs (8,067).

JEE Main Rank vs Seat Allotment
The JEE Main rank vs seat allotment is calculated based on marks scored in the JEE Main 2026 exams. A candidate scoring a rank between 1 and 5,000 can aim for popular branches like CSE, ECE, or Data Science in NITs like NIT Trichy, NIT Warangal, and NIT Surathkal.
Mid-tier NITs like NIT Calicut, NIT Jaipur, and NIT Rourkela can be available at a rank upto 15,000.

JEE Main Institute-Wise Competition Level
The competition level among NITs and IITs varies across branches and this data is calculated based on the previous years’ trends. According to the analysis, IIT Hyderabad has the highest competition with 240 applicants per seat, making it the toughest IIIT to get into.
Among the NITs, NIT Trichy, NIT Surathkal, and NIT Warangal have the most competition with approximately 70 applicants per seat.
Newer IIITs and NITs have a lower competition ratio but are still competitive for top branches like CSE, ECE etc.

JEE Main Category-Wise Seat Distribution
The JEE Main seat distribution follows a reservation policy to allot seats to candidates in the engineering field. General category students compete for the highest number of seats. OBC-NCL candidates have a reservation at 27%, while GEN-EWS candidates benefit from the 10% reservation, which has been given since 2019.

Total government Seats in JEE Advanced
The JEE Advanced exam offers seats to candidates in the Top IITs, and the seats in IITs increase slightly each year.
IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, and IIT Madras remain the top choices with stable seat numbers. Newer IITs like IIT Goa, IIT Bhilai, and IIT Jammu may have a slight seat increment in 2026.
The final official seat matrix for JEE Advanced 2026 will be released by JoSAA in June-July 2026.
