JEE Main B.E./B.Tech pattern 2026 will release on NTA JEE Main official website jeemain.nta.ac.in. JEE Main 2026 B.E/B.Tech exam pattern consists of all the important details of the question paper including type and number of questions asked, mode of exam, total marks, marking scheme among others.
As mentioned in the official brochure, JEE Main B.E./B.Tech paper will consist of 90 questions in total with 30 questions from different topics in each subject. You will be required to answer 20 MCQs and 5 Numerical value questions in each subject. Check JEE Main Detailed Syllabus here

Ques. Can I change my answer during JEE Main 2026 exam?
Ans. Yes, you can easily change your answers during JEE Main exam. However, you can do so only for the particular subject you are writing the exam for. For each subject you will be given 1 hour to mark/type/change your answers.
Ques. Do I need to attempt all the 90 questions in JEE Main 2026?
Ans. No, you only have to attempt 75 questions out of the given 90. This change in JEE Main exam pattern which reduced the number of question attempts was introduced last year.

JEE Main B.E/B.Tech Exam Pattern: Subject-wise Distribution of Questions, Total Questions and Marks (Detailed)
Each subject of JEE Main Exam 2026 B.E./B.Tech course will consist of 2 sections. You have to attempt MCQs from Section A and only 5 (five) out of the given 10 questions from Section B. The answers to questions in Section B are to be filled in as numerical values that are to be rounded off to the nearest integer. The marking scheme for both the sections is the same as stated above.
Moreover, out of the 90 given questions, you are required to attempt only 75 (maximum):
Mathematics: 20 MCQs + 5 (numerical value questions) =25 questions
Physics: 20 MCQs + 5 (numerical value questions) =25 questions
Chemistry: 20 MCQs + 5 (numerical value questions) =25 questions

JEE Main B.E/B.Tech Marking Scheme
As there will be negative marking in JEE Main, you are advised to not attempt questions you are not confident about. Check below the marking scheme released by NTA in the official brochure:
- +4 marks will be awarded for each answer marked correctly
- -1 will be deducted for each answer marked incorrectly
- 0 marks will be deducted for unattempted/marked for review answers

Ques. What are Numerical Value Questions in JEE Main Paper 1?
Numerical Value Questions will be asked in Section B of all subjects - Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry in JEE Main B.E./B.Tech paper. These questions will require you to enter an integral number using the virtual keyword in the space provided. Unlike MCQs, there will not be any answer choices. You will be required to attempt any 5 out of the given 10 questions.

While attempting JEE Main 2026 exam, it is important that you avoid getting penalised for silly mistakes as it could lead to a reduced score. It is therefore advised that you keep the following points in mind:
- Negative marking will be there for both section A (MCQs) and section B (Numerical Value Questions)
- One mark will be deducted for every incorrect answer
- In numerical value questions, make sure to round off your answer to the nearest integer. Do not leave the answer in the form of a decimal.
JEE Main B.E/B.Tech 2026 Exam Day Tips
It is common to feel anxious on JEE Main exam day. However, if you stay calm and positive, you can ace the test using a few tips mentioned below:
- All the questions should not be attempted. You should attempt only those questions that you are sure of as there is negative marking in both sections of each subject.
- Attempt the Chemistry section first as it includes a lot of direct, fact-based questions and hence, it is less confusing and more scoring. Mathematics and Physics tend to be on a trickier side, so they should be solved last.
- Use elimination technique for MCQs. Eliminate the incorrect options first and then mark the correct answers.
- In Mathematics and Physics you can use the substitution method in questions with variables x,y, z etc. Substitute these with 0,1 and try to solve wherever relevant.
- Always recheck your calculations.
- Do not spend too much time on a particular question.
