The exam has seven subject papers. Graduates and final-year students can apply for one paper or two papers in different sessions. Each paper has 60 questions for 100 marks, with separate rules for single-choice, multiple-select and numerical answers.
What Is IIT JAM?
JAM stands for Joint Admission Test for Masters. It is the entrance examination for postgraduate science and related programmes. IIT Kharagpur is organising JAM 2027. The participating IITs offer M.Sc., M.Sc. (Tech.), M.S. (Research), joint and dual-degree programmes through the applicable JAM admission routes.
Around 3,000 seats at 23 IITs are covered by the admitting-institute route for 2027-28. Other institutions also use JAM scores, including NITs through CCMN and institutions with their own admission process. The accepted test paper and undergraduate subjects depend on the programme, even when two courses have similar names.
JAM has served postgraduate science admissions for more than two decades. Its seven papers now include Economics alongside the core science and mathematical subjects. The exam score is used for academic admission, not recruitment.
IIT JAM 2027 Dates and Exam Sessions
| Event | Date |
|---|
| Registration opened | 11 September 2026 |
| Last date to apply | 19 October 2026 |
| JAM examination | 14 February 2027 |
| Result | 18 March 2027 |

You can take one paper, or two papers scheduled in different sessions. Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics can be combined; Mathematics and Chemistry cannot. Choose the combination after matching it to the admission requirements of your preferred programmes.
Candidates eligible for compensatory time receive one additional hour per paper, subject to the prescribed disability documentation and application requirements.
IIT JAM Eligibility: Exam and Admission
Graduates and students appearing in the final examination of their undergraduate degree in 2027 can apply. JAM has no age limit, minimum graduation percentage or limit on attempts for appearing in the examination. Indian and foreign nationals can take the test. Candidates with backlogs can also apply.
Admission requires the undergraduate programme to be completed before the admitting institute's admission date. Proof of passing, together with the required subjects and other minimum educational qualifications, must reach that institute within its deadline. A pending backlog at admission can therefore affect eligibility even though it did not prevent the JAM application.
Paper choice matters: taking a test paper does not establish eligibility for every course that accepts it. Match the programme's accepted paper, undergraduate subjects and degree requirements before selecting it in the admission form.
A B.Tech graduate may be eligible for programmes that accept that degree or any branch of engineering. Other programmes specify particular science subjects or the number of semesters studied. The programme-level requirements, rather than the degree name alone, decide the route.
IIT JAM Application Form and Fees
Complete the IIT JAM application form through JOAPS with personal details, academic information, the chosen paper or papers and examination-city preferences. Upload the photograph, signature and applicable certificates, pay the fee and submit the application.
| Category | One paper | Two papers |
|---|
| Female / SC / ST / PwD | INR 1,000 | INR 1,350 |
| All others | INR 2,000 | INR 2,700 |
The application fee is non-refundable. Keep the Class 10 certificate, photograph, signature, photo-ID details and applicable category or disability documents ready. PwD applicants also need the UDID number where required. The photo ID recorded in the application must be carried in original on exam day.
Defects identified during document scrutiny can be corrected without a rectification fee. Paid changes, such as adding a paper or changing certain application details, follow a separate process. A correction to a blurred signature is therefore different from changing your selected test paper.
IIT JAM Exam Pattern and Marking Scheme
Each paper is a three-hour computer-based test in English, with 60 questions for 100 marks. The JAM exam pattern has three compulsory sections.
| Section | Questions | Marks | Wrong answer |
|---|
| A: MCQ | 30: 10 of 1 mark, 20 of 2 marks | 50 | -1/3 or -2/3, respectively |
| B: MSQ | 10 of 2 marks | 20 | 0; no partial credit |
| C: NAT | 20: 10 of 1 mark, 10 of 2 marks | 30 | 0 |
An MCQ has one correct option. An MSQ can have one or more correct options, but not all four; full marks require the exact correct selection. NAT questions require a numerical entry through the virtual keyboard. Unanswered questions receive zero in every section.
Score example: 8 correct one-mark MCQs and 12 correct two-mark MCQs give 32 marks. If you also get 3 one-mark and 3 two-mark MCQs wrong, the deduction is 3 marks, leaving 29 in Section A. Five fully correct MSQs add 10. NAT marks are then added according to each question's weight. A count of correct answers alone cannot give the total score.
IIT JAM Subjects and Syllabus
| Paper | Main subject areas |
|---|
| Biotechnology (BT) | Biology, biotechnology, chemistry, mathematics and physics |
| Chemistry (CY) | Physical, organic and inorganic chemistry; mathematical concepts |
| Economics (EN) | Microeconomics, macroeconomics, statistics, Indian economy and mathematics for economics |
| Geology (GG) | Earth and planetary system, geomorphology, structural geology, palaeontology, stratigraphy, mineralogy, petrology, economic and applied geology |
| Mathematics (MA) | Real analysis, multivariable calculus, differential equations, linear algebra and algebra |
| Mathematical Statistics (MS) | Mathematical methods, probability, distributions and statistical inference |
| Physics (PH) | Mathematical methods, mechanics, waves, optics, electricity, magnetism, thermodynamics, modern physics, solids and electronics |
Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics are separate papers. MS includes probability distributions, estimation and testing alongside mathematics. Biotechnology also includes chemistry, mathematics and physics, so preparing only biology leaves part of the paper uncovered.
The syllabus lists topics, while the marking scheme fixes section totals. It does not assign a guaranteed percentage to each chapter. A topic appearing frequently in past papers can guide practice, but it is not a fixed weightage for 2027.
How to Prepare with IIT JAM Question Papers
Begin with the paper that matches your intended programme. In Mathematics, connect limits and differentiation to multivariable calculus and differential equations. In Physics, revise mathematical methods alongside mechanics and electricity. In Economics, practise optimisation and statistics along with the economic models that use them.
Use IIT JAM 2024 papers for a full timed attempt and the 2026 memory-based Mathematics and Chemistry questions for shorter subject revision. Keep the question code and option order aligned with the solution when checking an answer.
Separate three errors during review: an incorrect concept, a calculation or unit error, and an incomplete MSQ selection. For an MSQ, explain why each option is true or false; for a NAT, keep intermediate precision until the final rounding. This shows whether you need to relearn the topic or change the way you handle the answer format.
How Many Students Qualify IIT JAM?
In 2026, the subject-wise report recorded 48,170 paper appearances and 15,814 qualifying outcomes, a qualification rate of 32.8%. These are totals across papers: a candidate taking two papers can appear in two subject counts.
| 2026 paper | Appeared | Qualified | Qualification rate |
|---|
| Biotechnology | 11,084 | 2,593 | 23.4% |
| Chemistry | 11,021 | 3,249 | 29.5% |
| Economics | 2,807 | 629 | 22.4% |
| Geology | 1,813 | 627 | 34.6% |
| Mathematics | 9,617 | 3,463 | 36.0% |
| Mathematical Statistics | 2,705 | 754 | 27.9% |
| Physics | 9,123 | 4,499 | 49.3% |
Across the paper-wise category totals, the qualification rates were 29.4% for General, 39.8% for EWS, 30.0% for OBC-NCL, 47.9% for SC and 38.1% for ST. The PwD rate was 42.0%; PwD is counted across the other categories. These figures describe 2026 performance, not the share of admission seats reserved for each category.
IIT JAM Cutoff and Rank
There is no single passing mark for every JAM paper. Qualifying cutoffs differ by subject and category. The following marks are the 2026 qualifying cutoffs out of 100.
| Paper | General | OBC-NCL / EWS | SC / ST / PwD |
|---|
| BT | 42.30 | 38.07 | 21.15 |
| CY | 18.65 | 16.78 | 9.32 |
| EN | 40.63 | 36.56 | 20.31 |
| GG | 25.98 | 23.38 | 12.99 |
| MA | 12.65 | 11.38 | 6.32 |
| MS | 13.33 | 11.99 | 6.66 |
| PH | 12.04 | 10.83 | 6.02 |
Qualifying makes you eligible for the next admission stage; an institute's closing rank depends on the programme, category, seats, preferences and round. A qualifying mark is therefore not a college admission cutoff.
The highest 2026 raw marks were 85.67 in BT, 79.67 in CY, 87.33 in EN, 73.00 in GG, 82.67 in MA, 76.33 in MS and 68.67 in PH. Compare performance within the same paper. A score of 40 in one subject does not represent the same rank as 40 in another.
Admit Card, Answer Key and Result
Download and print the admit card from JOAPS. Carry it with the original valid photo ID entered in the application. For Indian candidates, the accepted ID options are Aadhaar, passport, PAN card, voter ID and driving licence. A mobile copy of the admit card or a photocopy of the ID is not enough.
After the test, compare the response sheet with the answer key and use the section-specific penalties to calculate raw marks. Raise an objection through the notified challenge process when a question or answer is disputed. The result is scheduled for 18 March 2027; your paper rank is used in the subsequent admission process.
IIT JAM Counselling and Admission
After qualifying, submit a separate admission application for the eligible IIT programmes in order of preference. A candidate who qualifies in two papers still submits one admission application. The 2027 admission processing fee is INR 750.
The IIT JAM counselling process uses the paper rank, programme eligibility, category and available seats. Under the IIT admitting-institute route, no additional written test or interview is required. Keep the institute's degree-completion and proof deadlines separate from the entrance-exam dates.
On receiving an offer, candidates can accept it as final, accept with an upgrade option for higher preferences, or reject and leave the process. The advance seat-booking fee is INR 15,000 for General/OBC-NCL/EWS and INR 7,500 for SC/ST/PwD. It is adjusted against the institute fee at registration.
NIT and other CCMN admissions use their own registration, programme requirements and allotment process. Other result-sharing institutions may also require a separate application. Apply through the route used by the specific institution rather than assuming the IIT preference form covers every JAM-accepting college.
