VITEEE 2021 Paper Structure and Section-Wise Weightage
VIT scheduled the main 2021 examination on 28, 29 and 31 May. The paper had five sections. Physics, Chemistry, English and Aptitude were common, while students answered Mathematics or Biology.
| 2021 section | Questions | Share of questions |
|---|
| Physics | 25 | 31.25% |
| Chemistry | 25 | 31.25% |
| Mathematics / Biology | 25 | 31.25% |
| Aptitude | 3 | 3.75% |
| English | 2 | 2.5% |
| Total | 80 | 100% |
Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics or Biology together accounted for 75 of the 80 questions. The remaining five were split between Aptitude and English. The 2021 duration was 90 minutes, not the 150-minute duration associated with the later 125-question format.
VITEEE 2021 Subject-Wise Question Analysis
The VITEEE 2021 questions and solutions include a combined paper with 25 questions each in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, followed by five language and reasoning questions. The subject analysis below refers to this paper.
Physics
Physics covers gravitation, elasticity, friction, projectile motion, rotation and centre of mass. Electricity and magnetism questions include transformers, Coulomb's law, circuits, capacitors, Lenz's law and magnetic fields. Other questions come from heat, simple harmonic motion, waves, optics, radioactivity and logic gates.
Mechanics and properties of matter account for nine questions; electricity, magnetism and electronics account for eight. Some are direct concept checks, such as the magnetic force on a charge moving parallel to a magnetic field. Others require a relation between two changing quantities.
For example, the wire-extension question compares two wires of the same material under the same force. Wire A has half the length and twice the diameter of wire B. Since extension is proportional to length and inversely proportional to cross-sectional area, its extension is 1/8 of wire B's. Doubling the diameter makes the area four times larger.
Chemistry
Organic chemistry includes reaction sequences, Grignard reagents, reduction of nitrobenzene, tautomerism, stereoisomerism and biomolecules. Physical chemistry covers the unit cell, electrolysis, reaction order, equilibrium, cell potential and thermodynamics. Inorganic questions include xenon compounds, coloured ions and coordination isomers.
The reaction-order question links half-life to initial concentration. If half-life varies inversely with the square of the initial concentration, the reaction is third-order. This follows from t1/2 being proportional to a1-n, where n is the reaction order.
The electrochemical-cell question uses reduction potentials of 1.33 V and 0.77 V. Subtracting the anode potential from the cathode potential gives 0.56 V. Organic reaction sequences need a different approach: identify the functional group after each reagent before choosing the final product.
Mathematics
Calculus has the largest share of the Mathematics section, with questions on Rolle's theorem, continuity, tangents, integration, area and differential equations. Geometry and vectors cover circles, skew lines, lines and planes, angles and distances. Algebra questions include simultaneous equations, complex numbers, sets, relations and inequalities.
One growth problem states that the quantity rises by 10% in two hours. For exponential growth, the doubling time is 2 log(2) / log(1.1), or about 14.55 hours. Adding the same 10% every two hours would treat the growth as linear and give a different answer.
In the Rolle's theorem question, differentiating exsin x gives ex(sin x + cos x). The required point in (0, π) is 3π/4. This is a useful example of checking the interval after solving the derivative equation.
English and Aptitude
The combined paper ends with comprehension, a direction question and a syllogism. It groups these five questions together. The official 2021 exam divided them into 2 English questions and 3 Aptitude questions.
For the direction question, track each turn before calculating the final position. For the syllogism, check whether the conclusion follows from the statements; an everyday assumption is not enough to establish it.
Topic-Wise Weightage in the 2021 Paper
Organic chemistry has 11 of the 25 Chemistry questions, while calculus has 10 of the 25 Mathematics questions. These counts describe the combined paper linked here, not a fixed distribution across every 2021 slot.
| Subject and topic group | Questions in the combined paper | Share of that subject |
|---|
| Chemistry: Organic chemistry | 11 / 25 | 44% |
| Chemistry: Physical chemistry | 10 / 25 | 40% |
| Chemistry: Inorganic chemistry | 4 / 25 | 16% |
| Mathematics: Calculus | 10 / 25 | 40% |
| Mathematics: Geometry and vectors | 7 / 25 | 28% |
| Mathematics: Algebra, sets and logic | 7 / 25 | 28% |
| Mathematics: Inverse trigonometry | 1 / 25 | 4% |
The VITEEE syllabus covers the wider subject list for revision. In this paper, Chemistry moves between reaction-based questions and numerical problems, while Mathematics gives substantial space to both calculus and geometry.
VITEEE 2021 Difficulty Level
Student-feedback reports described the 28 and 29 May papers as generally moderate, while 31 May was reported as easy to moderate. Mathematics was frequently described as lengthy. These are reported impressions, and difficulty varied by slot.
The questions show why the experience could differ by subject. Chemistry includes direct reaction and concept questions alongside calculations. Mathematics often needs several steps, such as finding the equation of a tangent or solving a line-and-plane problem. In Physics, a short formula question can appear alongside a problem that combines forces, motion or energy.
For revision, separate the Mathematics questions into calculus and geometry before attempting them again. In Chemistry, compare mistakes in reaction sequences with mistakes in numerical calculations. The VITEEE preparation guide covers subject-wise revision and mock-test review.
Marking Scheme and Practice Score
The linked 80-question paper uses 1 mark for a correct answer and no negative marking. A wrong or unanswered question earns zero. With 50 correct answers, the score is 50 out of 80, whether the remaining questions are wrong or blank.
| Response in the linked 80-question paper | Marks |
|---|
| Correct answer | +1 |
| Wrong answer | 0 |
| Unanswered | 0 |
| 50 correct, 20 wrong, 10 unanswered | 50 / 80 |
For that attempt, the percentage score is 62.5%. Accuracy among the 70 attempted questions is about 71.4%. These measure different things: the first uses the full paper as its denominator, while the second uses only attempted questions. Neither is a percentile or rank.
The VITEEE exam pattern covers the later paper format and marking rules. Keep the 2021 practice score separate when using a newer marking scheme.
Clarifications for the Combined Paper
Physics Q10: The linear expansion coefficient of glass is 9 × 10-6 °C-1. The value 27 × 10-6 is its volume expansion coefficient. The two coefficients differ by a factor of three.
Mathematics Q59: An implication and its contrapositive are equivalent. Both ¬p ∨ q and ¬q → ¬p represent p → q, so the question has two equivalent options rather than a unique answer.
