VITEEE 2018 Paper Structure and Section-Wise Weightage
VITEEE 2018 was a computer-based test in English, with 150 minutes to answer 125 single-correct MCQs. Each correct answer earned 1 mark. Students took Mathematics or Biology along with Physics, Chemistry and English.
| 2018 paper section | Questions / marks | Share of total marks |
|---|
| Physics | 40 | 32% |
| Chemistry | 40 | 32% |
| Mathematics / Biology | 40 | 32% |
| English | 5 | 4% |
| Total | 125 | 100% |
The three science subjects had equal weightage. English made up the remaining 4%, with comprehension, grammar and pronunciation in its syllabus. Aptitude was not part of this four-section pattern.
VITEEE 2018 Subject-Wise Question Analysis
Physics
The 2018 Physics questions and solutions include work done by a variable force, heat capacities of a gas mixture, electric-field diagrams, resistor colour codes and self-inductance. Other questions cover refraction, hydrogen energy levels, radioactivity and NAND gates.
Some questions need a short calculation. For example, a coil develops an emf of 40 V when its current changes by 2 A in 0.05 seconds. Using L = emf × time / change in current gives 40 × 0.05 / 2 = 1 H.
The variable-force question takes an extra step. Since the force changes with position, work is found by integration, not by multiplying one force value by the distance. For F = 2x + 3x2, the integral from x = 2 to x = 4 gives 68 J.
Physics Q5 has more than one valid option. The tension relation T = BIr doubles when either current or radius doubles, with the other values fixed. The linked solution selects only the current option.
Chemistry
The 2018 Chemistry questions and solutions cover atomic structure, lanthanoids, crystal defects, combustion and molar conductivity. Organic questions ask about alcohol isomers, oxidation, Grignard reagents, a reaction sequence and amines.
Organic chemistry accounts for five of the ten questions in this paper. The oxidation question needs a reagent that converts a secondary alcohol into a ketone while retaining the carbon-carbon double bond. The reaction-sequence question follows acetic acid through an ammonium salt and an amide to a nitrile. These questions need knowledge of the reaction conditions as well as the functional group.
In the conductivity question, combine the given values so that sodium and acetate ions cancel: 3 × 12.69 + 24.52 - 3 × 9.10 = 35.29 S cm2 mol-1. The closest option is 35.
Chemistry Q4 has inconsistent units and options. Its stated values give about 62,759 days, not the 72 days shown in the linked solution. If the daily heat requirement is 10,000 kJ rather than 10,000 J, the result is about 63 days.
Mathematics
The 2018 Mathematics questions and solutions cover matrix identities, complex numbers, an ellipse, vectors, reflection in a plane, limits, integration, differential equations and probability.
For the ellipse 4x2 + 9y2 - 16x = 20, completing the square gives (x - 2)2/9 + y2/4 = 1. The larger denominator is a2 = 9 and the smaller is b2 = 4, so the eccentricity is √5/3.
The probability question asks for the variance when a die is thrown 100 times and an even number counts as a success. Here, p = 1/2 and variance = np(1 - p) = 25. The expected number of successes is 50; that is the mean, not the answer to the variance question.
Topic Coverage in the Papers
Organic chemistry has the largest share of the Chemistry paper. In Mathematics, algebra, calculus, and geometry with vectors have three questions each. The counts below cover these 10-question papers, not the full examination.
| Subject and topic group | Questions in the paper |
|---|
| Chemistry: Organic chemistry | 5 of 10 (Q6-10) |
| Chemistry: Inorganic chemistry | 3 of 10 (Q1-3) |
| Chemistry: Physical chemistry | 2 of 10 (Q4-5) |
| Mathematics: Algebra | 3 of 10 (Q1, Q2, Q10) |
| Mathematics: Calculus | 3 of 10 (Q6-8) |
| Mathematics: Geometry and vectors | 3 of 10 (Q3-5) |
| Mathematics: Probability | 1 of 10 (Q9) |
The VITEEE syllabus lists the units for broader revision. Use these papers for topic practice alongside the full syllabus.
Difficulty of the Questions
The papers include direct questions and multi-step problems. In Physics, the inductance calculation is shorter than the gas-mixture heat-capacity or radioactive half-life calculation. Chemistry moves from identifying valency to tracking reactions and combining ionic conductivities. Mathematics requires changes in form, such as completing the square before finding an ellipse's eccentricity.
Difficulty varies by question: direct substitutions take fewer steps than reaction sequences or calculations involving several concepts.
VITEEE 2018 Marking Scheme vs 2026
VITEEE 2018 awarded 1 mark for a correct answer and had no negative marking. The 2026 scheme awarded 4 marks for a correct answer and deducted 1 mark for a wrong answer. A ten-question practice attempt therefore has different totals under the two schemes.
| Response | 2018 marking | 2026 marking |
|---|
| Correct answer | +1 | +4 |
| Wrong answer | 0 | -1 |
| Unanswered | 0 | 0 |
| 8 correct, 1 wrong, 1 unanswered | 8 / 10 | 31 / 40 |
For all 125 questions, the maximum was 125 marks in 2018 and 500 marks in 2026. The 2026 rules also gave zero for marked-for-review responses. The VITEEE exam pattern covers the later paper structure and marking rules; use the year-specific scheme when comparing practice scores.
How to Practise with the 2018 Questions
Start with the subject you are revising. For Physics, separate mistakes in choosing a formula from mistakes in substitution. In Chemistry, group the five organic questions by task: isomers, oxidation, reactivity, reaction sequence and amines. For Mathematics, redo the ellipse and probability questions without looking at the answer options.
The VITEEE preparation guide covers subject-wise revision and mock practice. For a longer attempt, choose another set from the VITEEE question papers. The three original PCM questions below offer a short practice round with explanations and a retry option.
