CLAT reservation is set by each participating NLU, not by one common national seat matrix. For 2027-28, NLSIU lists 310 BA LLB seats including 10 additional Karnataka seats. NALSAR lists 132 BA LLB and 66 LLM seats in its regular matrix.

Vertical categories such as SC, ST, OBC-NCL and EWS work alongside horizontal provisions such as women, disability or a local-student category. The programme, university and supporting documents determine which provisions apply.

Within the base intake, NLSIU specifies horizontal reservations of 15 seats for PwD, 90 for women and 75 for Karnataka students. These are not extra seats to add to 310. The separate 10 Karnataka seats are allotted by entrance-exam merit.

The published ST count is 22 and the General count is 122. Percentages and seat counts should be read as published; rounding 7.5% independently and substituting 23 would change the university’s stated matrix.

The UG total is 132; the PG total is 66. Horizontal reservations are 39 UG and 19 PG seats for women, and 6 UG and 3 PG seats for PwBD. The brochure permits up to three additional all-India unreserved admissions over each programme’s intake to cover later withdrawals; these are not part of the base totals.

Telangana SC seats are subdivided into Groups I, II and III: UG 0, 3 and 2; PG 0, 1 and 1. Telangana BC-NCL seats are split A/B/C/D/E: UG 2/3/1/2/1 and PG 1/1/0/1/1. A broad SC or BC label does not remove the applicable subgroup condition.

A reserved-category candidate who qualifies on unreserved merit is counted against an unreserved seat at NALSAR, rather than consuming the reserved seat merely because of their identity.

Karnataka and Telangana Student Conditions

For NLSIU, the alternative routes cover children of defence personnel or ex-servicemen with Karnataka declared as hometown, Karnataka government employees, Karnataka-cadre All India Services officers, and eligible CAPF personnel with Karnataka declared as hometown. Service outside Karnataka must correspond to the candidate’s study outside the state.

For example, three years of Karnataka schooling can be combined with at least four corresponding years of a qualifying parent’s outside-state service. Where the candidate has not studied continuously in Karnataka for at least one year, the brochure requires at least seven corresponding years of that outside-state service. An address alone does not establish the study or service route.

Category Certificates for CLAT 2027 Admission

Category and BPL fields cannot be changed after the CLAT application is submitted and paid. The 2027 FAQ permits applying before a reservation certificate is available, but the necessary evidence must be produced at admission.

NALSAR requires the specified OBC-NCL and EWS certificates to be issued on or after 1 April 2027. Its Telangana BC-NCL requirements also include the relevant subcategory, and Telangana SC claims require the applicable group certificate under the state’s 2025 rationalisation framework. Do not use a certificate for a different category or assume an old issue date meets the university’s requirement.

A mismatch in a reservation claim can cancel the provisional category-based admission. The Consortium’s current instructions allow consideration in later rounds without that category. They do not guarantee another seat.

The BA LLB route and LLM route have different qualifying examinations; their local-student evidence must match the programme.

Reservation and Closing Ranks

A rank attached to an NLU is incomplete without its programme, round and allocation category. A General row may also carry a horizontal reservation. Read the allocation marker before treating it as the all-India open cutoff.

NRI and NRI-sponsored applicants must approach the relevant NLU directly for those seats; the Consortium does not allot them. Foreign nationals do not take CLAT and also follow the relevant university’s admission route. These routes should not be mixed into the regular matrix above.

Reservation Cases

Can I add horizontal seats to the total intake?+

No. Horizontal reservation normally operates within the stated category seats. NLSIU’s 10 additional Karnataka seats are expressly separate; the 75 horizontal Karnataka seats are not another addition to 310.

Does living in Telangana alone qualify for NALSAR’s local seats?+

Not automatically. The residence route requires at least four years within the previous seven and the qualifying examination from an institution in Telangana. The alternative study route requires four consecutive years of study and the qualifying examination there. For UG, that examination is 10+2 or equivalent; for PG, it is LLB. Match the route and programme rather than relying only on a current address.

Can I claim OBC-NCL at every NLU using one rule?+

No. The category scope, certificate format, date and state-specific subcategory may differ. NALSAR, for example, distinguishes its all-India OBC-NCL and Telangana BC-NCL pools.

Are the selected universities the complete CLAT seat matrix?+

No. These are detailed NLSIU and NALSAR comparisons. Other participating NLUs publish their own programme and reservation matrices.
