National Medical Commission (NMC) has recently revised the age criteria for the NEET UG Exam, which is the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test for undergraduate medical courses. The new rules state that candidates must be 17 years old by or before January 31st of the admission year, replacing the previous cut-off date of December 31st.

• According to the GMER-23, candidates aspiring for MBBS, BDS, and AYUSH courses must have completed 10+2 or its equivalent with subjects including physics, chemistry, biology, and English.
• NEET UG Exam regulations were published on June 2, 2023, in the Indian Gazette and are also available on the official website of NMC (nmc.org.in).

One significant change introduced by the new regulations is the implementation of a common counseling process for admissions to graduate medical courses in all institutions. This process will be based on the NEET UG Merit List.

The Undergraduate Medical Education Board (UGMEB) will publish guidelines for conducting counseling, and the designated authorities will submit the final list of admitted students to the UGMEB within one week after completion. Additionally, each medical institution must submit the final list of admitted students to the UGMEB within one week after the last date for joining the course.

As per the regulations, the UGMEB will publish the model curriculum and outcome objectives on the NMC website, which will serve as the foundation for each university's medical curriculum. Alongside this curriculum, a variety of choice-based credit courses of limited duration will be offered. Furthermore, a UG medical student must complete a rotating medical internship, as per the Compulsory Rotating Medical Internship Regulations (CRMI), 2021, to graduate.

Brijesh Sutaria, a parent of an MBBS student, expressed his support for the new regulations, stating that the medical admission process will now be transparent and fair. He believes that all aspirants will have an equal opportunity to secure admission to reputed colleges based on their merit. Additionally, the new rules prevent students from blocking multiple seats, ensuring fairness in the admission process.

NEET UG Tie-Breaking Rules

In the case of a tie in NEET UG marks, the scores obtained in physics, chemistry, and biology will be taken into account. If the tie continues, candidates will be selected through a computerized draw of lots.

The National Medical Commission (NMC) recently issued a notice clarifying that the previous procedure outlined in the information bulletin published by the National Testing Agency will be used to determine the inter-se-merit of candidates for tie-breaking in the NEET-UG 2023 results.

On Tuesday, June 13th, the NEET UG 2023 results were announced. Prabanjan J from Tamil Nadu and Bora Varun Chakravarthi from Andhra Pradesh secured the top two positions with identical scores of 720 marks, marking a historic event of two candidates sharing the All India Rank 1 (AIR 1). As per the current NEET tie-break rules, both candidates' biology (zoology and botany), chemistry, and physics scores will be taken into consideration. If the tie persists even after this evaluation, the candidate who appeared earlier in age will be awarded the higher rank.

GMER 2023 Guidelines for NEET UG Exam

According to NMC's new regulations of GMER 2023 following are the new guidelines:

• All medical institutions in India will conduct common counseling for admission to graduate courses in medicine based on the merit list of the NEET-UG. 
• Additionally, the commission has reduced the maximum duration of the MBBS program from 10 to nine years.
