GATE 2026 CSE: Qualifying Cutoff vs Admission Cutoff

The qualifying cutoff is released by the conducting IIT (IIT Guwahati for GATE 2026) along with the result. Clear it and you get a scorecard. That is all it guarantees. The admission cutoff is set by each individual institute during COAP and CCMT counselling rounds. It is significantly higher, especially for CSE, which is the most competitive paper.

GATE 2026 CSE Safe Score and Expected Cutoff FAQs

Ques. What is the expected GATE 2026 CSE qualifying cutoff for the General category?

Ans. Based on trend data from GATE 2024 (27.6) and GATE 2025 (29.2), the expected qualifying cutoff for GATE 2026 CSE in the General category is around 30-32 marks out of 100. The official cutoff will be released by IIT Guwahati with the result on March 19, 2026, at gate2026.iitg.ac.in.

Ques. What GATE score is needed to get CSE M.Tech at IIT Bombay or IIT Delhi?

Ans. Based on past COAP data, a GATE score of 800-900+ (out of 1000) roughly 65-78 raw marks is needed for CSE at IIT Bombay or IIT Delhi for General category candidates. These institutes typically call candidates for a written test or interview after initial shortlisting, so the score is a necessary but not sufficient condition.

Ques. What GATE score is safe for NIT Trichy or NIT Warangal CSE admission?

Ans. The CCMT 2025 closing score for NIT Trichy CSE was 777 (opening 892) and NIT Warangal CSE was 761 (opening 856) for the Open category. For 2026, a GATE score of 780-850+ is a safe target for NIT Trichy and NIT Warangal CSE for General category candidates. Scores below 750 make Round 1 admission to these institutes unlikely; later rounds may have lower cutoffs.

Ques. What is the difference between the GATE qualifying cutoff and admission cutoff?

Ans. The qualifying cutoff is the minimum mark to pass GATE and receive a scorecard. It is released by IIT Guwahati with the result. The admission cutoff is the minimum GATE score set by each individual institute (IIT, NIT, or IIIT) during COAP or CCMT counselling, and is significantly higher. Qualifying does not guarantee admission anywhere; it only makes a candidate eligible to apply.
